Dear Volunteer:
Plans are well underway for the 1993 RACE FOR THE CURE which
benefits the battle against breat cancer. The race, a 5K
run/walk and a 1 mile fun walk, will be held on Saturday,
June 19th and is expected to draw approximately 20,000
participants. We are pleased that Vice President and Mrs.
Gore have agreed to be the Honorary Co-Chairmen of the event
and Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly has agreed to serve as the
Honorary Washington, D.C. Community Chairperson.
The purpose of the RACE FOR THE CURE is to promote positive
awareness, education, and early detection of breast cancer
and to raise funds to battle this disease which will be
diagnosed in over 182,000 women this year resulting in
46,000 deaths. Money raised will be used to provide breast
health care and education for our communit's medically
underserved population and will help fund local as well
as national research.
As a Volunteer Team Captain for the RACE FOR THE CURE, I
am recruiting friends and associates to help serve as
Race Marshalls on race day. I hope you will be able to
give a few hours to this worthwhile and fun event.
Also, I am trying to make this into an "APO Weekend." My
roommates and I will be hosting a party on Friday, June 18th
for those brothers coming from out of town (even for local
brothers). The RACE is on the morning of the 19th, followed
by anything else you want to do. Tour D.C., have a picnic,
play Duck-Duck-Goose on the Mall at 9pm (remember last
year....). On Sunday, I am trying to coordinate a Car-Wash
to help raise funds for our Regional Conference in
November that all brothers can help out with.
If you are interested in coming, please e-mail your address,
phone number (and T-shirt size for race volunteers) to me at:
tanner@wam.umd.edu or
licata@urap.gsfc.nasa.gov
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or
call me at (301)441-3554.
Maps and directions will be provided to those expressing
interest. Housing will be available...my place can house a
whole bunch (13 brothers from EZ last year), and there are
other "APO Houses" that may be available.
Those interested in running/walking the 5k, or those that
want to donate money to the cause, let me know as well so
that I can get the forms to you as soon as they are available.
