Great opportunity to learn about and serve youth offenders (ages 12-19) =
transitioning from corrections to the community! Perfect opportunity =
for people of all ages (at least 21) and backgrounds, with a passion to =
help youth succeed and willing to commit to one year of service in =
Indiana.
=20
While helping youth succeed, you will network with social workers, =
community leaders, criminal justice professionals, teachers, counselors, =
and correctional staff while learning the juvenile justice system, =
non-profit, and the resources available to juvenile offenders in =
Indiana. See below for detailed information about AIM and the open =
AmeriCorps positions:
=20

AIM OVERVIEW

=20

AIM (Aftercare for Indiana through Mentoring), a non-profit, began in =
1996. Dr. Roger Jarjoura, a professor in the School of Public and =
Environmental Affairs at IUPUI, recognized that youth leaving the =
Department of Correction were doing so without a reentry plan and were =
returning to incarceration in a relatively short period of time.=20

=20

There are more than 900 juvenile offenders incarcerated on any given day =
in Indiana correctional facilities. These young men and women will be =
released in a relatively short period of time. AIM's adult volunteers =
in conjunction with the Indiana Mentor Corps, help prepare these youth =
for their release and return to the community. Through providing =
effective role models, AIM targets the unique needs of these youth, =
inspiring purpose, motivation and direction for as long as the youths =
are receptive to our help. With a focus on life skills, AIM steers the =
youth toward success by engaging community resources and service =
providers. AIM inspires the youths to pursue successful and productive =
futures where they reach their potential, through self-development and =
the utilization of community resources.

=20

MISSION STATEMENT

To support Indiana's incarcerated youth in making the transition from =
corrections to community through healthy relationships with adult =
mentors.

=20

PHILOSOPHY

=20

*	We believe these youths are important individuals.
*	We will provide support to them regardless of what they have done in =
the past.
*	We want to help them discover and develop their positive attributes.
*	We want to help them learn from the mistakes they have made in the =
past.
*	We want them to believe that we accept them unconditionally.
*	We are members of a team. We will provide support to each other.
*	We will follow through on the commitments we make.
*	We will strive to educate members of the community about the =
importance of our work and the needs of the youth we serve.
*	We will strive to break down the stereotypes that the community has of =
the youth we serve.
*	Our work is only beginning when these youth are released into the =
community.
