As was reported in the national media, during the National Scout Jamboree this year, the opening arena show (which was to have featured President Bush) ended up being cancelled but not until after several hundred people needed medical attention for heat exhaustion and dehydration. What was not widely reported was how one member of APO took the initiative to help make sure that the same thing wouldn't happen at the closing show. Here's part of a message sent out on Scouts-L describing Rodger Salzman's efforts.
> The morning after the first, aborted, arena show, Rodger Salzman,
> chairman of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity's National
> Display staff for the Jamboree, who in his day to day life is a manager for Wal-Mart,
> contacted the national office of Wal-Mart, and effectively said, "After
> last night's problem, we (Wal-Mart) must do something to help out and
> avoid a similar problem at the closing show." By the end of the day,
> his efforts resulted in two full truckloads of bottled water [68,000 twenty-ounce bottles]
> being donated and diverted to the Jamboree. Those bottles were a large part
> of the supply on hand for the second show.
>
> Rodger and Wal-Mart should be commended for fast action.
Here is a link to a press release from Wal-Mart about their donation: http://www.walmartfacts.com/newsdesk/article.aspx?id=1276
During the Jamboree, Rodger was also awarded the Herbert G. Horton Service to Youth Award, along with Michael Brown, Ken Davis, Wayne Bingham, and Dave O'Leary. Congrats to them all!
