Every four year the Boy Scouts of America sponsor a National Jamboree.
Over 50,000 Scouts, Leaders, and staff members spend ten days at Fort AP
Hill in Caroline County, Virginia. The Jamboree reflects the skills of
Scouting, our national heritage, physical fitness, environmental
conservation, and the true spirit of Scouting. Activities include archery,
biking, buckskin games, confidence courses, conservation programs, scuba,
kayak fun, fishing, and raft encounters. Regional action centers with
rappelling towers are truly popular, as are trap shooting, an American
Indian village, and the opening and closing arena shows, not to mention
daily stage shows, exhibits, and many other activities. It's Scouting and
American history at their very best!
Alpha Phi Omega sponsors a booth in the National Exhibits area. This is
the perfect venue to attract new Brothers and reunite alumni with the
Fraternity. The booth will collect interest cards from Scouts heading off
to college in the fall, and also promote Alpha Phi Omega to the local
councils and Scoutmasters as a great opportunity for their Scouts back
home as they go off to college.
The alumni are the heritage of the Fraternity, and by all aspects, the
lifeblood of Scouting. In 2001 over 350 Brothers stopped by to visit the
booth and place a pin in the Chapter Map. Even those Scouters that were
not alumni had tremendous praise for the Fraternity because of the help
and support it has shown to the local troops and councils.
To commemorate the Fraternity=92s participation in the Jamboree, a special
patch has been created. The patches have been approved by the National
Office and are being sold for $5.00 each to raise money to support our
booth display and staff, and the recruiting activities at the Jamboree.
The patches may be ordered by sending in your name, address, the number of
patches you would like (limited to 20), and a check for $5 per patch plus
$1 to cover postage. The checks must be made out to Alpha Phi Omega and
sent to Bill Amidon, 80 Scenic Hill Rd., Trumbull, CT 06611-2509. The
patches are available now and will be sent out as soon as the orders are
received. Additional patches will be available at the Alpha Phi Omega
Booth.
A picture of the patch will soon be on the nation web site, but until then
you may look here http://home.earthlink.net/~wamidon/APOPatches.htm.
The Jamboree is a tremendous service project provided to our youth. If you
have the chance, please come and visit the Jamboree and the APO Booth. It
is an experience you will remember forever.
