The Alpha Phi Omega Natiuonal Service Fraternity, at its recently
concluded national convention in Denver, presented their first group of
Herbert G Horton Service to Youth Awards.

The Herbert G Horton - Service to Youth Award was established by Alpha
Phi Omega to recognize Brothers of Alpha Phi Omega, National Service
Fraternity, who are in good standing that have made significant
contribution to the youth of their communities by volunteering in the
programs of the Boy Scouts of America, and is one of a group of awards
that BSA has recognized as Boy Scout Community Organization Awards.

The recipients included:

Robert Amick, James Chandler, Craig Donais, Frank Evans, Clark Israel,
Lorin Jurvis, Joseph Kuchta, Michael Nathan, John Russell, Milton Smith,
Tom Strong, and Howard Wolf.

Robert Amick Gamma Theta
As a long time Brother and Advisor of the Gamma Theta Chapter (Univ of
Colorado - Boulder), Bob has supported one of the strongest, long
standing service to Scouting programs in the nation. Bob is an active
member of the Fraternity's Scouting and Youth Service Committee. The
chapter conducts a Merit Badge University each year serving hundreds of
Scouts, sponsors a Venturing Crew and Sea Scout Ship, and support many
local BSA district and council programs. Bob is very active with the BSA
as a council and region level volunteer in the Venturing program. He has
participated in and led contingents to several national and world
Jamborees.

James Chandler Omicron Tau
Jim joined Alpha Phi Omega in 1964 as the Chartering Advisor to the
Omicron Tau Chapter at Alma College in Michigan, and later served as an
Advisor to the Gamma Theta Chapter. As a Boy Scout Executive in various
parts of the country, Jim has supported Alpha Phi Omega chapters and
activities. For the last ten years, Jim has served on the Fraternity's
National Board of Directors as the Representative of the Boy Scouts of
America.

Craig Donais Kappa Omicron
Craig joined the Fraternity at the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst, where he coordinated the chapter's Merit Badge University and
other service to Scouting projects. Craig is an active member of the
Fraternity's Scouting and Youth Services Committee, attending Boy Scout
National Council Meetings and leading several committee projects. He was
the Chair of the Scouting Reference Committee at the 1992 National
Convention in Boston.

Frank Evans Kappa Omicron
Frank Evans is a long time Scouting Advisor to the Kappa Omicron Chapter
at the University of Massachusetts. He joined the chapter in 1970 and
soon became Scoutmaster of a local troop for disabled young men, and has
served in that role ever since, including the chapter in the troop's
activities. Frank has also actively promoted and advised a variety of
other service to Scouting programs in central Massachusetts.

Clark Israel Beta Eta
Clark's Alpha Phi Omega experience began at the University of Missouri
Columbia, and he soon rose through the ranks to serve on the
fraternity's National Board from 1976 until 1982. More recently, he is
participating actively as the Region 8 Scouting Chair and representative
to the National Scouting & Youth Service Committee. Clark's career as an
Executive with the Boy Scouts of America provides him with opportunities
to promote the Fraternity to high school age Scouts and adult Scouters.

Lorin Jurvis Delta Nu
Lorin's distinguished Alpha Phi Omega journey began at Yale University
and has included many years serving on our National Board of Directors,
including as National President. Lorin also actively served the Boy
Scouts of America, in particular with the Exploring program. Throughout
his tenure with each organization he worked to draw the two closer
together.

Joseph Kuchta Alpha Chi
Brother Joe Kuchta served as the Scouting Advisor to the Alpha Chi
Chapter at MIT throughout the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. As part of his
many contributions to the chapter, Joe supported the chapter in
developing and maintaining their service to Scouting program, including
regular camp work projects and many other council and district events.
Joe represented Region One on the National Scouting Relations Committee
for many years.

Michael Nathan Zeta Omicron & Iota Rho
Michael Nathan has a distinguished record of service in developing the
relationship between Alpha Phi Omega and the Boy Scouts of America.
Mike's contributions are numerous, from serving as a Scouting Advisor to
the Iota Rho Chapter at Florida State University for the past 15 years,
to representing the Fraternity at numerous BSA National Council
meetings, National Order of the Arrow Conferences, and other events.
Mike serves on the Executive Board of the Boy Scout council in
Tallahassee, Florida, and served the Fraternity as the Region 4 Director.

John Russell Zeta Mu
John Russell was a founding member of the Zeta Mu Chapter (Catholic
University - Washington DC) of Alpha Phi Omega in 1948, and the
rechartering Scouting Advisor in 1992. John's leadership and service
with the Knights of Dunamis and in the formation of the National Eagle
Scout Association provided many opportunities to promote the
relationship between the Fraternity and the Boy Scouts. John
participated in many BSA National Jamborees, including roles on the
Service Corps with Alpha Phi Omega and the Knights of Dunamis. He is an
active promoter of the APO Jamboree Service Corps for the summer of 2005.

Milton Smith Kappa
Milton Smith has constantly worked toward building the relationship
between the Fraternity and the Boy Scouts since pledging with the Kappa
Chapter at Carnegie Mellon University in 1983. He led many chapter
Scouting service projects and instituted several others. He later served
as the Scouting Chair for Section 99 and Region One throughout the
1990's. He is an active member of the National Scouting and Youth
Service Committee and presented on chapter scouting programs at this
National Convention.

Tom Strong Kappa
Tom has been a regular advocate of building the Alpha Phi Omega
Scouting relationship for the past ten years in the Pittsburgh area,
both with the Kappa Chapter and then as Section Chair. Based on his
experience with the Venturing Crew sponsored by Kappa and his
involvement with the Greater Pittsburgh BSA Council Venturing Committee,
he has encouraged other chapters to establish Venturing Crews and
service to Scouting programs. He has supported Kappa's Merit Badge
University program and many other service to scouting projects as the
chapter's Scouting advisor for the past several years.

Howard Wolf Theta Upsilon
As a re chartering founder of the Theta Upsilon Chapter at Case Western
Reserve University, Howard provided leadership to the chapter's service
to Scouting programs from the start. He expanded his service to the
Fraternity by serving the exhibit staff at the Boy Scout National
Jamborees in 1993, 1997, and 2001, including chairing the effort twice.
He is planning to serve on the exhibit staff again in the summer of
2005. Howard is an active member at large of the Scouting and Youth
Services Committee. He represented Region 5 on the committee from 1995
1997, prior to his election as Section Chair in eastern Ohio.

---------------------
I do have additional information on Howard Wolf. He has served 4 times
on Jambo staff, twice as Chairman of the APO booth, and will be there
again this summer. He's from Cleveland, where he serves on Troop and
Pack Unit Committees, District Committee, and District Advancement
Committee. (And BTW, I'm his proud father.)
