I do agree that fixing the small stuff does take care of a lot of the big
stuff. However, it has been my experience that the rule limiting who can be
an advisor has caused more good than bad. The students I have served for
the past 5 years have not expressed a complaint about making older students
advisors; rather they have expressed concerns on how to recruit advisors.
Broadening the definition only does a stop-gap measure -- it does not solve
the problem.

Matt...

I would have to say that this is not really muddying any waters. The best
way to address a problem is to fix the little stuff... for some reason the
big things seem to fix themselves when you do (at least it has worked that
way for me). I think that a good advisor can go a long way in helping a
chapter to address membership issues and giving people other perspectives to
make a chapter more inclusive. When I was rush chair for my chapter we had
by far the largest group that I had heard of before or since. The problem
was that while I could get people interested in APO and checking it out... I
could not find a way to include every potential member and the pledge class
suffered.

To say that addressing an advisor issue and creating the potential for a
more diverse chapter dynamic is muddying the waters, seems too quick a
dismissal.
