I really like this post by Matt and feel that it is directly on target.
Advisory membership is just that.. a MEMBERSHIP and up to the individual
chapters to decide who is appropriate to advise them. It is NOT something that
should be legislated or restricted by bylaws or given veto power to
determination by a Sectional Chair or Regional Director.
If you want to change that bylaw, I would totally remove the clause that
Undergraduates can't serve as Advisors and replace with "The chapter may
confer Advisory membership on qualified individuals who are pursuing
undergraduate degrees in the following cases: non traditional student, pursing
second bachelor's degree, are not an undergraduate at the University where they
would be an advisor...etc... Or maybe simply a clause stating that such
membership may be conferred subject to approval by the National Membership
Director with policy being that the chapter sends in a letter with the Advisory
Membership form stating why such a person would not be suitable for Active
membership and why Advisory membership makes more sense.
But then again, I could take another tack. In most cases, Nationals would not
know that such a person is a current Undergrad unless someone from the school
said so. Any chapter, as it stands now, can send in a form and make someone an
advisor even if they are an undergrad and who would really know?
