At Penn State (Alpha Beta), one of our brothers, through one of his classes, started what is known as "The Council of Lionhearts". The organization has representation of a lot of the service organizations on campus (Red Cross Club, Alternative SPring Break, APhiO, Gamma Sig, etc.). The first and most major of all its endeavors is a campus-wide project called "Fresh START" - which is an acronym (the meaning escapes me at the moment). My Last two semesters on campus I was part of the organizing committee. It brought together Freshman, or first year students to the main campus, in service to the State College Community, and ties it all together with reflection at the end of the individual projects (students are broken down into groups depending on their preference of a type of project). At the end of the program, all of the groups are reconvened for food & an inspirational speaker. Following those there is a mini "Volunteer Fair" of all the organizations that have someone
representing them. The Upperclassmen from different service organizations apply to be Team Leaders for the groups of first years. It is a hugely successful program. The first year we had the program, the goal was 150 first year students to participate & they exceeded that by 100. The second year (the year I was on the committee) the goal was 300, and we exceeded that by 75. For a campus of 40,000 people, that's a lot of participants & team leaders - each small group had 2-4 team leaders to 10-25 participants.
How's that for success?
At your service,
Mo
There is an effort to start a service council on
campus. I thought of the idea last year (probably not the first person to
come up with it) to try to help each other out & ensure mutual existance.
This year, NSCS & ALD started it to coordinate projects & avoid conflicts &,
on my inquiry, joint projects.
Any successful peaceful coexistance stories?
