Brothers and Friends,
=20
Please indulge me in this post, as I remember a good friend and a fine =
Brother, whose time with us was far too short, John Grossi. I apologize =
for the length, but I feel as though it is appropriate in this instance.
=20
I first met John in September 1995 not long after he was elected to his =
first year as Section 94 Chair. I was attending a chapter meeting at my =
alma mater (Sigma Xi - U of Maine) and would soon become an advisor to =
the chapter. John was young (heck I was almost young back then myself) =
and very idealistic. He believed in the principles of Alpha Phi Omega =
and was ready to help wherever he could. I must concede, I did not =
quite know what to make of John at first. Our backgrounds in Alpha Phi =
Omega to that point could not have been much more different had we =
tried. I was not sure how successful he would be, but I never =
questioned his desire to do good things for Alpha Phi Omega, and the =
chapters he served.
=20
John loved road trips, and in Region I, the stories of his road trips =
have become the subject of legend over the last decade or so. During =
the first year that I knew John was the first time I openly questioned =
his sanity to his face. He was planning to leave Orono, ME and travel =
to Burlington, VT on a Sunday morning, and then head home to Boston, MA =
from there. It was Saturday night, and we were relaxing at the =
residence of a mutual friend, and we learned that the forecast was =
calling for snow. Now, for those of you who are not familiar with =
Northern New England, here is a word of advice. You NEVER want to =
travel from Orono/Bangor, ME to Burlington, VT when the forecast is for =
snow. It is a six hour drive over mostly two lane mountain roads. Not =
advisable. John was not to be deterred, and left that morning for =
Burlington. Later I would find out that he did in fact decide to turn =
back, due to the weather. I recount this because it is evidence of his =
commitment to Alpha Phi Omega. And keep in mind, Orono, ME is four =
hours from his home, the drive from Orono to Burlington, VT is six =
hours, and then it is about 3.5-4 hours home again to Boston. There are =
many other current and former Section Chairs on this list, and we are =
all familiar with the trips, but this is still impressive to me. He did =
not complete this trip, on that occasion, but he did on other occasions.
=20
John's love of road trips also showed through in the effort that he put =
into the then-extension effort at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. =
Montreal is a cosmopolitan major city not far from the Vermont and New =
York borders. Like many city dwellers, the people involved in the =
extension effort at McGill relied on public transportation as opposed to =
cars. This was in stark contrast with the rest of Section 94, comprised =
of campuses that are more rural (with the exception being UVM in a small =
city), most students either have their own cars, or easy access to cars. =
And of course having effective transportation between Montreal and =
Northern New England would make too much sense. Realizing that the =
folks at McGill should not be left out of the activities of the Section, =
he would regularly travel from Boston to Montreal to transport the folks =
from McGill to an event, and often to the reverse on the way home. Thus =
the origin of the long-running, and rather tired joke, about everything =
going through Montreal. I don't bring this up now to mock John, but =
rather as an example of his dedication to making Alpha Phi Omega work =
for everyone and his long standing dedication to Canadian Extension.
=20
The effort that John put into Section 94 paid off, and in a matter of a =
year or two, we were no longer a collection of six far-flung chapters, =
we were an actual Section with an identity and a personality. We =
learned how to work together, and play together, and get along as a =
group. No greater tribute to this can be found than in the Region I / =
II Conference held in Portland, ME. Chapters that were six hours apart =
worked effectively together to make it happen and make it a success. I =
had succeeded John as Section 94 Chair by the time the Conference was =
actually held, but I have no doubt that the ability of this to happen =
was rooted in the successful term that John had as Chair.
=20
Earlier I mentioned that John seemed very young and idealistic when I =
first met him. But one of his greatest strengths was always his ability =
to learn and to grow. A very accepting person, he had a thirst for =
knowledge and was never afraid to explore new places. I can clearly =
recall a map on the wall above his desk. It is a map of the State of =
Maine broken down by municipal divisions. Each city, town, or township =
that he visited was colored in light pencil, and it was an impressive =
list, including some places that I have yet to go, and I have lived here =
for 15 years. We would trade stories on our travels through Down East =
Maine and the Maritime Provinces of Canada, and he introduced us to =
Ganong Chocolates of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, a real treasure right =
on the USA/Canada border.
=20
John was very successful in his role as Section 94 Chair, and we are =
still reaping the benefits of his leadership and service to the Section =
today. John laid the groundwork for myself, the current chair Joe =
Hausmann, and Joe's eventual successor. That young kid that I met back =
in 1995 that I did not quite know what to make of, had grown up a great =
deal, and taught me a thing or two along the way.
=20
I was honored to succeed John as Section 94 Chair in April 1999. I =
never would have been Section Chair in the first place, or had any =
success at all, had it not been for John. The world of Alpha Phi Omega =
beyond my own chapter was something I had no interest in, and never =
envisioned taking part. John opened my eyes and changed all of that, =
and I will be forever grateful for that gift.
=20
When John was done with Section Chair, he was by no means done with =
Alpha Phi Omega. I can clearly recall John very anxious for the role I =
would have for him on my staff. John had just been made an Advisor to =
the Theta Zeta Chapter at the University of New Hampshire. I told John =
that I wanted him to be there as an advisor and a resource to me, and to =
enjoy his time as a Chapter Advisor, something that I called one of the =
most rewarding things you can ever do. Most people know that John did a =
good job as Section Chair. I can proudly say, as a peer, that John was =
a much better Chapter Advisor than he was a Section Chair, and the =
Brothers from Theta Zeta are fortunate to be able to call him one of =
theirs.
=20
Allow me to provide a brief synopsis of John's involvement in Alpha Phi =
Omega
=20
- Brother, Omicron Iota Chapter, Worcester Polytechnic =
Institute
- Honorary Brother, Phi Epsilon Chapter, Maine Maritime Academy
- Advisor, Theta Zeta Chapter, University of New Hampshire
- Section 94 Chair, 1995 -1999
- Recipient of Section 94 DSK
=20
I am sure there are other points of recognition, but I cannot recall =
those at this time.
=20
John left us far too soon, and as such, I have been trying to make sense =
out of his passing. I have not been able to do so yet, but I can make =
sense of his life, and I feel it can be an effective guide for others as =
well.
=20
1. Never stop learning and growing
2. Explore new places and meet new people
3. Help people and do good things along the way
=20
A formula for a life well lived, brought to us by a damn fine Brother =
and friend, John Grossi. May you Rest in Peace.
=20
In Brotherhood,
Stephen Merrill
