Wow...I think this approach would be a bit harsh. I doesn't take much to
imagine a situation where some VP of Membership is negligent in their duties
and "misplaces" the stuff in a move. And especially for Chapters that do
not have an office or other space on their campus, the chances of misplacing
a ritual increase. And you want to fine the Chapter? I can see a Brother
slipping into the sunset because their peers now want them to pay $100 or
some other large sum of money because they were forced to take home ritual
stuff over Summer Vacation and displaced said stuff.

I agree that we as a fraternity should take better care to insure that old
rituals are not used, and even turned in, but with the fact that ritual
books are going out of date every two years, this is going to be somewhat
difficult and time consuming, with no real value added. Personally, I
completely dislike the idea of ritual being up for review every two years,
as it promotes waste again because books are only good for two years and
somebody ALWAYS feels the need to make some change. Not to say that change
is bad, per se, but if rituals could only be reviewed every six or eight
years, I think that this could help in reducing cost and putting together
all the changes in one batch. At the Section Conferences in the spring
after Convention, there could be a major training session to instruct
chapters on all the ritual changes.

I have noted that it is kind of difficult to get Chapters to really take
ritual changes as seriously as they should when the changes are by and large
trivial. Review every 6-8 years would guarantee that there would very
likely be some significant change proposals.

My 3 cents.

Randy, this is a wonderful question, and here is an opinion or two:

Old rituals should not be used. Each ritual should have a unique ID number
and
essentially "loaned" to chapters until the next edition of the ritual is
printed.
Chaper who lose their rituals should be fined.

We should always keep tabs on missing rituals. Some people might not take
it
this seriously, but I do. PERSONALLY, I would love for each brother to
receive
their own ritual (as some orgs do) but I think that since APO is so large,
that
is not only unfeasible, but not a good idea if we actually want to keep our
few
secrets really secret.

So anyway, yeah.....old rituals need to be tracked and turned in when a new
edition is available.

I have never been able to find an answer to the specific differnces between
contemporary rituals and the older ones. I think tha deleted aspects of the
ritual should be preserved and discussed, but not forgotten.

Wouldn't it have been nice to see a re-enactment of the ORIGINAL ritual at
the
75th Anniversary convention?
