hi kate, brian, alan, lori, ellen, (the journeymen)
alex, (& the rest of apo-printshop-manager@mit.edu)
sarah, (& the rest of apo-president@mit.edu)
   press operators

* for health reasons, i will no longer be doing training or qualifying
  runs

i may use the presses as a press operator, and to fix problems with
a press, but otherwise won't use or help others print with them

* as i'm available (& for as long as the actives want),
i can continue to advise and consult on the print shop

i also plan to finish the cart for the small press and continue to
put out the type i brought for the press in 2004, and otherwise
  continue to improve the shop

* as the journeymen (the only people authorized to train and
  qualify press operators) know:

if a person is seriously harmed by the Press (press op or
visitor), the MIT Administration is likely to take the Press Shop
     away from Alpha Chi

if improperly used, EITHER PRESS CAN MAIM PEOPLE FOR LIFE

improper use includes, but is not limited to: printing after midnight,
if you haven't had 8 hours sleep in the last day (that is, been awake
for more than 16 hours), being distracted by conversation, etc.

for this reason, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ANYONE TRAINED ON THE PRESS BE
FULLY BRIEFED ON THE DANGERS, AND WHAT NOT TO DO

AND DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY KNOW HOW TO USE THE SHOP SAFELY

* as the journeymen know:

the Shop and both Presses are hard to repair and replace. Also
quite expensive to replace. It is better to take care of them,
oil, thoroughly clean, not abuse, etc.

for this reason, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ANYONE TRAINED IN THE SHOP BE
FULLY TAUGHT HOW TO CARE & MAINTAIN THE SHOP AND PRESSES, AND WHAT
NOT TO DO TO THE SHOP

in my experience, about a quarter of the press operators don't even
do the minimums: oiling, cleanup up the ink, putting type away

* it is for these two reasons, we have journeymen and are careful
  about choosing them

best in having and doing service with the Letterpress Print Shop
