Uh, I'm not really happy about this entire discussion, but I do
feel like I need to mention that I don't buy the claim about TechCASH
being any different. When you put money on TechCASH, you're handing
money to MIT to buy things over time. If it needs to collect sales
tax for things it sells you, then it needs to collect sales tax for
those things. Putting money into an MIT account without stating
what it's for and then moving it around to a group's account to acquire
something that you were supposed to pay tax on is subterfuge, I think.
(No, I'm not a lawyer, but yes I'm sure that the TechCASH people are
careful about keeping track of which purchases are and aren't tax-exempt,
and if we were to be taking payments with TechCASH for things that
aren't actually exempt purchases, we'd be screwing the over because
MIT would do its reporting incorrectly.)
