Greetings, all!
This is in reference to talking to the 250-odd freshmen who were interested in
community service and whom we have sent letters to.... Having talked to fifteen
to twenty frosh, I'd like to share a few thoughts and experiences from my
talking with them. I'm going to try to keep this short:
1) ASK THEM IF THEY RECEIVED A LETTER FROM APO (if they haven't gotten the
letter yet, for whatever reason, you're going to have to start from the VERY
beginning - or come back later). If yes,
2) ASK THEM IF THEY'RE STILL INTERESTED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE (many people have
overcommitted; if they're too busy, it's time for a graceful exit). If yes,
3) ASK THEM IF THEY MIGHT CONSIDER APO. Not much more to say here: just answer
questions, and especially encourage them to attend the open meetings:
4) ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGE THEM TO ATTEND AN OPEN MEETING: there's just too much
to cover; that's why I have been having problems talking to people - it's hard
to decide what to focus on. An open meeting should go a long way towards giving
them all the information that they need.
Open meetings:
Monday (today, 1/24) at 7 pm in Private Dining Room #1,
Sunday (1/30) at 2 pm in Private Dining Room #1,
Monday, (2/7) at 7 pm in 8-105
The third one hasn't been publicized as well, but we're working on it; there's
only a week between the last open meeting and the first pledge ceremony, so
encourage them to attend projects....
5) ASK THEM IF THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING PROJECTS: being in charge
of Reg Day (one of our neatest projects, let me add), I would LOVE to have a
number of prospectives helping us; just mention that we work Reg Day, that they
get breakfast, and the time commitment is as much as they would like. Note: we
need as many people as possible to help with breakdown and sorting address
cards, so if people can come back, that would be excellent.
IF THEY CAN HELP OUT WITH REG DAY, please let me know. E-mail me, or call me at
5-7232. I can give them a run-down and take care of wake-up calls, etc.
Tips:
- deemphasize the fraternity bit: lots of people are afraid of the time
commitment involved with Greek life; if you assure them that we're more an
service group rather than a Greek organization, that would help....
- emphasize the service-bit
- if they sound interested, but very uncertain about their time, ask if it would
be all right to add them to our prospectives list. If it is, tell Barbara. BE
CAREFUL WITH THIS ONE - it makes it sound like a commitment, which, in a way, it
is....
