This letter was written by the MIT International Students Against Racism. - ------- Forwarded Message Dear Fellow students and MIT Community members, We are writing this letter to let you know about two disturbing incidents that occured this past Thursday and Friday involving the Poppa & Goose and Andy's Hotdog vending food trucks. As you may know, both of these trucks are parked on Ames St. in front of Bldg. 17. The first provides hot Oriental style lunches while the second provides standard American fare. Some of you may also know that the parking situation on Ames St. has become very strict with both the MIT as well as Cambridge police ticketing left and right. Because of the tightened regulations, the food trucks only have permission to sell provided they are parked at a legal spot (no yelllow lines). As such, in order to provide lunch on a regular basis, a food truck vendor either has to try to reserve a legal spot using his own private vehicle or just come out to the site on the day of the sale and hope to find a legal spot (which is very rare). Last Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7, the Poppa & Goose truck took several hours during the day to stake out Ames St. in order to get a legal spot. It took them until 4 AM on one day and 1 AM on the second day to get a spot. The following morning on the day of sales they came with the food truck and pulled out the private car to park the truck in. As they pulled out the car, Andy's Hotdog who was parked right behind them illegally on the yellow line, zoomed into their spot. The owner of Andy's then turned around and laughed at the Poppa & Goose people , yelled racial slurs and obscenities at them, and mockingly told them they were so stupid and that he was showing them how to operate the "American Way." Fellow students and staff, we ask you not to support Andy's any longer. He preaches "the American Way" that gives all Americans a bad name. The American Way is not about THIEVERY and RACISM but about making an honest living through hard work and playing fair. It is people like Andy's that corrupts America and noble institutions like MIT where no room exists for theft and racism. If ousting Andy's means being removed too, both Poppa & Goose and Falafel King, the third truck on Ames St., have agreed that this is the fate they will willingly submit to just to remove Andy's and with it all the hostility and racism from the MIT campus. We are therefore meeting with Mr. Richard Scali, executive director of the Cambridge license Commission, to make a formal request that the operating licenses of all the trucks on Ames St., including that of Poppa & Goose, be revoked. The people of Poppa & Goose would rather lose their jobs and business than allow such hostility to continue. We therefore ask you to support us in trying to show Andy's what the American Way is all about by boycotting his operation. This is, after all, what fairness is all about.
