Hi APO News! (Hi Jack!)
I hope everyone had a great Christmas/Hanukkah/Secular Holiday Season :-) a=
nd is having a wonderful new year <(^-^)^
It's a new year and what's a better way to start off 2014 than with some se=
rvice? Here's a quick e-mail with some of the upcoming service projects we =
have right now.
Blanket-Making for Project Linus // This Saturday (the 18th) at 10 AM - 1 P=
M // In the lovely APO office (W20-415) (Bring Scissors that can cut throug=
h fabric if you can!)
What's Project Linus? In the words of the Boston chapter, they are "are de=
dicated to creating and delivering new handmade blankets to any child who m=
ay be in need of some extra comforting that only a beloved "blankie" can pr=
ovide." As of 2011, the Boston Chapter (founded in 2001) has donated fort=
y thousand blankets, mostly in the Greater Boston Area, although some have =
made their way to victims of disasters like Hurricane Katrina. For more, c=
heck out their website at http://www.bostonprojectlinus.com/ .
Book Assembly for the National Braille Press through People Making a Differ=
ence // Wednesday the 22nd 6:15 - 9 PM (Register at https://s.zoomerang.com=
/s/pmd012214 by the 15th) // At the National Braille Press
FREEDOM SUMMER by Deborah Wiles is about similar boys in the South in 1964,=
one white and the other black, which means that one isn't allowed to do ev=
erything his best friend is. Then a law is passed that forbids segregation =
and opens the town pool to everyone. The boys are so excited that they race=
each other there...only to discover that it takes more than a new law to c=
hange people's hearts.
These special print-Braille books enable sighted and blind parents and chil=
dren to enjoy reading together, an important part of building literacy, eve=
n among pre-school-age children. Volunteer labor (and donations) allow thes=
e special books to be sold at the same price as the print-only version.
Bookex is happening soon! Be on the lookout for the dropoff dates (January=
27th - February 1st) and the days we're running it (the week of February t=
he 3rd). Be on the watch for more e-mails as it nears.
I'm looking forward to a good year of service and hope you are too. More u=
pdates to follow.
