WEEKNIGHT SOCIAL JUSTICE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

"Teachers and parents could use this book as a quiet but powerful
introduction to the prejudice experienced by many Americans."
Kirkus Reviews, starred review

WHAT Collate and check
         print-braille books for children

WHEN Wednesday, January 22
         6:15* PM to 9:00 PM
*Optional: Arrive at 5:45 to share pizza & soda for $8pp.

WHERE National Braille Press, Boston
         Two blocks behind Symphony Hall

WHY FREEDOM SUMMER by Deborah Wiles is
about similar boys in the South in 1964,
one white and the other black, which means
that one isn't allowed to do everything his
best friend is. Then a law is passed that
forbids segregation and opens the town pool
to everyone. The boys are so excited that
they race each other there...only to
discover that it takes more than a new
         law to change people's hearts.

This is the February selection for the
         Children's Braille Book Club in
         contracted braille for ages 4-10.

         These special print-Braille books enable
sighted and blind parents and children
to enjoy reading together, an important
part of building literacy, even among pre-
         school-age children. Volunteer labor
(and donations) allow these special books
to be sold at the same price as the
         print-only version.

Volunteers age 12+ welcome. Volunteers will
         carefully collate printed paper and
         braille-embossed plastic pages while walking
around tables, then carefully check their work,
learn how Braille is produced, and may receive an
optional tour to see how braille is
produced at the National Braille Press.

This project requires repetitive hand motions,
good fine motor skills, standing for most tasks,
careful attention to detail and, like all PMD
projects, participation for the entire project
         time span.

HOW To participate, sign up yourself by 1/15 at
         https://s.zoomerang.com/s/pmd012214

         Incomplete submissions cannot be honored.

After you sign up successfully, you will see a
confirmation screen but NOT receive an email
confirmation message. Then the week before the
project, PMD will email PDFs with specific
         information, including directions to the
project site by public transit and by car,
temporary parking permits to the first six
people who request (and receive) parking when
registering online, checklist on how to prepare,
what to expect, map, and a waiver.

PMD policy requires individuals only sign up themselves
(and may not sign up or reserve spaces for others).

WHO People Making a Difference (PMD) is a nonprofit
         organization that promotes informed and
         responsible volunteerism by involving
         individuals in meaningful, hands-on work
that meets local needs and by assisting
         companies in building successful community
         involvement programs that:
       * Produce appreciable results while
         conserving recipients' limited resources,
       * Educate volunteers about broader issues,
       * Bring people together to make a difference.
