Ideas Competition Coordinator

Overview

The MIT Public Service Center has an immediate opening for a Program
Coordinator to join its Ideas Competition team.  The Ideas Competition
Coordinator will be responsible for the planning, coordination and
implementation of the year-round activities of the annual Ideas
Competition.  Working in a fast-paced environment as part of a team
responsible for engaging MIT students in =93invention as public
service,=94 the Ideas Competition Coordinator will plan events, provide
guidance to student teams, and manage the judging and award process.

The Ideas Competition Coordinator will also collaborate closely with
the Ideas Global Challenge Administrator to launch a new web interface
that will provide added capabilities for the Ideas Competition as well
as expanding opportunities for alumni engagement through the
development of the Ideas Global Challenge, to be launched in 2011.
This Ideas Competition Coordinator position requires excellent
organization and communication skills, a high level of efficiency and
management skill, and a commitment to student and community
development.  The position offers an exciting work experience that
includes the opportunity to serve people in need, to work closely with
a team of great colleagues at a great institution, to be creative and
entrepreneurial, and to foster leadership, innovation, and
entrepreneurship.

This is a full-time position with benefits. Annual renewable contract.
Salary mid-$40=92s to low$50=92s depending on experience.

Detailed Description

The Ideas Competition Coordinator is responsible for making sure that
the Ideas Competition runs successfully each year and continues to
grow and thrive.  Working closely with colleagues, the Ideas
Competition Coordinator recruits and manages a staff of volunteers,
and leads them in a variety of tasks including planning and
implementing a series of Competition events, publicizing Ideas, and
recruiting and advising participants.  In addition, the Ideas
Competition Coordinator takes care of all aspects of operations and
logistics, including recruiting team mentors, arranging the judging
process, and handling reporting and documentation; manages
communications and strategic partnerships; and assists with
fundraising and planning.

Administration

=B7        Oversee risk management, travel and financial arrangements for
teams

=B7        Handle contracts and vendor relationships

=B7        Maintain records; track Competition information on the web,
email, and print

=B7        Coordinate program evaluation and reporting including the
development of useful databases and other program management tools

=B7        Assist with resource development and donor stewardship

Coordination

=B7        Organize events, including networking dinners, workshops,
proposal review sessions, awards ceremony, judging, project displays

=B7        Coordinate the application and participation processes;
manage and collect team implementation reports

=B7        Recruit and manage volunteer staff, judges, mentors, event speak=

=B7        Run a two-day retreat for Ideas winners

Education and Communication

=B7        Advise teams through the proposal review process, check-in
meetings, and field experiences, personally and through volunteer

publicity, and websites

=B7        Work with PSC staff to coordinate communication, including
news releases and the Ideas website

faculty, teams, mentors, judges, sponsors, peers at other
institutions, press, etc.

Qualifications

Bachelor=92s degree required. This full-time position requires excellent
collaboration and communication skills and leadership competencies
along with capacity for operational management.

communication skills are required for successful implementation and to

Experience with entrepreneurship, fundraising, project management,
communications technologies, technology transfer, field experience in
the developing world, and other relevant areas are assets; potential
in all of these areas is more important. Experience within MIT or
other higher education institutions is an added benefit.  Must be
available for weekly evening volunteer meetings, evening events and
some weekends.

About Ideas and the Public Service Center

The IDEAS Competition is an annual invention competition that invites
MIT students and their collaborators to develop innovative solutions
to community challenges of any kind, anywhere in the world.  Past
winners have developed creative solutions for a variety of issues,
resulting in new water and sanitation systems, medical devices, cell
phone software, agricultural technologies, and leadership development
models. Teams are judged for the innovation, feasibility and impact of
their project and receive awards up to $7,500 to implement their ideas
over one year.Ideas is an acronym for Innovation, Development,
Enterprise, Action and Service.

The MIT Public Service Center (PSC) promotes and supports public
service activities at MIT, working with students, faculty, staff,
alumni, and others.  The nine PSC professional staff work
independently and collaboratively to provide leadership in their
specific areas, contribute to the collective work of the PSC, and
foster public service throughout the MIT community for the benefit of
under-served communities locally, nationally, and internationally.
