It doesn't seem to have as much to do with having the correct fonts as
finding them before the scalable fonts that show up unreadable. On
glacier, I get perfectly good results (the same as if I xset +fp the
pmax_ul4 font directories), but my XConfig has only these two font
directories:
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
I think there are XFree86 3.x font handling bugs involved here, and I
don't know if we can do very much about them without a lot of effort.
