i've been spending some time porting the sipb-athena-8.2 tree to
netbsd/sparc, and thought i'd report on progress/ask some questions.

i have a machine running most of the tree. there are some things that
aren't built:

* third/motif and everything that depends on it, because i don't have
  source access.

* athena/bin/lpr, again because of source access.

and there are some known problems:

* afs. the kernel module works, but some of the utilities (vos and
others) don't. i believe the stuff i have was built for 1.2-current,
so a rebuild might solve the problem. again, source access.

* there's no real install procedure right now.

* there are some emulation issues that i need to work on. i'm setting
ATHENA_SYS_COMPAT to all of the various sparc sysnames that have been
used in the past, and some solaries applications break. this may well
be a problem with my emulation tree.

and some questions:

1) does anyone care about this? i have several sparc boxes that i'd
like to use as athena machines, but i'm not sure if there's any
real demand for it. of course, it runs on 4c machines, and has lower
system requirements (and better performance?) than solaris.

2) what should i do about getting access to restricted components of the
tree, and/or having someone else build these parts?

3) both athena 8.3 and netbsd 1.4 are in alpha. is it worth working off
of one/both of these instead of 8.2 and 1.3.3?
