Sorry, most of the mail on this went through privately between me and jered.
I changed it so it gave XFree3.1_[server_type]

so it gives some information as to the hardware if it can (I realize
SVGA is not helpful, but S3 or ATI is). The reason I decided to keep
that is because the most common use of machtype -d is for olc to send
information about the machine. This shows up as part of the machine
configuration then, and is useful for helping figure out problems.

If you have a good way of querying to make the information more correct, I
 would take it and add it to machtype. Changing XFree3.1_S3 to ??? is 
not helpful.
Perhaps the information isn't exactly what you're hoping for, but it
is better than nothing. (the other problem being that olc seems
very picky about valid inputs, which is why you have to test machtype
to make sure it seems to work well with olc).
