So, since it seemed likely no one was actively doing anything
with deathtongue (hey, it was *OFF*), I decided to install
Solaris 2.6 beta on it:

        SunOS 5.6 Beta Update August 1997

I attached a 1 gig drive from the stack next to yaz (formerly from
a news server, mhpower said it was ok to borrow) as SCSI id 6,
repartitioned it, and untarred partitions s0 and s1 from my
copy of the 2.6 beta CD onto partitions s0 and s1, and then
did something like:

  cd /sol_2_6_smcc_svr/s1
  installboot /sol_2_6_smcc_svr/s1/usr/platform/sun4c/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk \
    /dev/rdsk/c0t6d0s1

I was able to boot the install with "boot cdrom:b" (kind of amusing,
that).

The install crashed with SIGFPE repeatedly, possibly due to the
presence of a corrupt disk label on sd@4. I labelled that disk, and
then it worked just hunky-dory, installing onto available space on
sd@6.

I changed the root password to the sipb root and exported the install
CD via NFS. I also killed sendmail and fixed up the DNS.

Unfortunately Greg wasn't able to find an afs client for it,
despite the hints in the transarc cell:

[mary-kay-commandos!jhawk] /afs/transarc.com> echo *56*
sun4x_56 sun4x_56.fcs sun4x_56b sun4x_56c
[mary-kay-commandos!jhawk] /afs/transarc.com> ls -ld *56*
drwxr-xr-x  17 root     root        2048 Jun 10 11:27 sun4x_56
drwxrwxrwx  10 root     root        2048 Aug 26 18:21 sun4x_56.fcs
lrwxr-xr-x   1 7815     root           8 Jul 15 16:30 sun4x_56b -> sun4x_56
lrwxr-xr-x   1 7815     root           8 Jul 15 16:30 sun4x_56c -> sun4x_56

I also spent some time looking around to no avail.

That's about it, it's up and running, presumably with no compiler, etc., etc.
The login banner is somewhat stark compared to prior versions:

Whee.
