If I'm not mistaken, you're not restricted from creating "GNU Kava, a free
implementation of Java". It wouldn't be a bad choice for the new GNU embedded
language people have been talking about, either. Hack the G++ front-end to
compile Java and retarget the back end to generate Java's p-code. Then build
a GPL-ed Java p-code machine.
I bet someone's already working on this.
