Just a few weeks ago I sought from you all help in getting
documentation and advice on learning Java in a WIN 95 environment. I
did not know any concepts pertaining to object oriented programming,
had not yet then seen any Java code, had no Java-enabled browser, and
didn't even know vaugely related stuff like what an HTML formated
document was.

In the hope of assisting others who are now at the stage I was at then
and who might be using the same platform, I offer the following brief
progress report on my journey into learning Java.

I knew I had to start with documentation. A few of you pointed me at
Sun's FTP site: ftp://ftp.javasoft.com. There in the /docs area I
found all the documentation that a beginner could ever want:
Development Kit API stuff (JDK-1_0-APIDOCS.zip), Turorial
(tutorial.html.zip), etc., etc.

After I downloaded and PKUNZIPed 'everything' with a .zip ending, I
tried to read it with NETCOM NetCruiser's browser. That was
unsuccessful because firstly, unzipping truncated filenames and
extensions, and secondly the NETCOM browser is not Java-enabled.
Another java-interest tipster pointed me in the direction of Netscape's
FTP site(s):ftp[1-7].netscape.com. Where, in their
/2.0goldbeta1/windows area, I downloaded the latest Netscape
Java-enabled browser.

NETCOM allows launching of internet apps, as long as they're 16-bit
ones, which Netscape V2.0 isn't, so I ended up having to run Netscape
stand-alone and accessing my HTML docs locally. But first I had to
unzip them properly with unzip.exe which I downloaded from the ftp
site: ftp.uu.net and the /pub/archgive/zip/win32 area.

Just before solving this last problem, I read a java-interst message
from Bill Bercik announcing that he'd made available the Java(TM)
documentation in Win Help format at: htp://www.dippybird.com/java.html.
What a great service!

I am now happily Win Helping myself to the Java documentation and
browsing through the Java tutorial. I now understand the difference
between an object and a class, know what html format means, and am
about to write my first ("Hello World") Java application and applet.
Maybe by the time my two year old learns ho to read, I'll be an
accomplished Java developer. Hmmmm ... Mind boggling, n'est pas?
                                                            DB
