Java-SIG Announces the First CD-ROM Applet Library
BROOKLINE, MA -- Continuing its support of the Java community, Java-SIG,
the national Java special interest group, today announced the upcoming
release of the Java-SIG Library of Applets CD-ROM (JLA). The JLA is a
collection of hundreds of ready-to-use applets for Sun's
platform-independent Java programming language.
"Applets" are mini-applications created with Java, the hot new programming
language developed by Sun Microsystems which works with any "Java-aware"
web browser. Applets can be embedded directly into the code used to
create Worldwide Web pages, where they add an exciting new level of
interactive multimedia to formerly static web sites. The Java-SIG Library
of Applets will spotlight the impressive versatility of this language.
Applets included in the JLA will range from simple text manipulation and
3-D animated graphics to systems or network management tasks -- best of all,
the JLA will allow users to add these applets to their web pages
instantaneously, by simply copying the appropriate files from the CD.
Literally hundreds of applets from developers all over the world are being
included on this CD which will feature some of the most innovative,
useful, and amusing work being done in Java. "We feel that the diversity
of the contributors to this project is a testament to Java's universal
appeal," said Alexander Newman, executive director of Java-SIG's parent
organization, the Sun User Group (SUG). "That theme of diversity runs
throughout the entire project. It's amazing how differently two people
can address the same problem with the same set of tools. This disk
includes utilities, animations, games, simulations, and tools. It's a
very practical demonstration of Java's limitless flexibility."
In addition to being the first library of its kind, Java-SIG's Library of
Applets is an excellent learning and development tool for those interested
in Java and the changes that it is introducing to the Web. It includes:
* Source and byte-code for each applet
* Examples of each applet in use
* An easy-to-use HTML format
* All available documentation
Java-SIG is planning a final release of the JLA in April 1996, with future
volumes to follow. As Java-SIG is dedicated to furthering the use and
development of Java applets, applications, and development tools, the JLA
will sell for only $50 (with discounts available to Java-SIG members).
Interested parties should email Java-SIG at java-sig@sug.org. Some applets
from the JLA can be seen in advance of the final release on Java-SIG's "Cool
Applet of the Week" page (http://www.sug.org/java-cool.html).
