popup menus

I've seen a couple examples of pop-up menus on the net, however, none of
them seem to be implemented quite as elegantly as I'd like. Is it at all
possible to create a pop-up menu that will run in an applet that makes
use of AWT widgets? I've muddled through the process myself a few times
and it doesn't seem like it is possible. Is managing the whole thing
yourself w/o the use of any AWT components the only way to create a
pop-up window?
