and cryptography, in general.
At a very conceptual level, the objective of the Java Security model
is to have applets authenticate themselves before executing on your
machine. This allows you to configure a security policy on your
computer that ranges from permitting only certain applets to execute
to allowing any applet to execute on your computer.
At an individual level, it is to permit individuals/organizations to
conduct commercial transactions over the Internet, using a form of
Public Key authentication.
