There may be an alternative. Find a local Internet Service Provider in your
area who uses Solaris servers, get a UNIX shell account, ftp the Solaris
1.0Beta to your account... dial up, log on, and:

1. Use the "vi" editor to write no-graphics, stand-alone Java applications
which may be compiled, debugged, and executed from the UNIX command line
(vi's not that hard), or

2. Add PPP or SLIP to your account, get an X-Windows client for your
platform, whatever it is, and invoke X-Windows to run applets + graphics
(albeit slowly).

I haven't done this, nor do I use X-Windows. Check w/ the ISP... your
milage may vary.
