I think the Internet community needs to immediately start
looking at/thinking about implementing a Microsoft
Blackbird class in Java, as a protocol handler or content
handler, coupled with a Blackbird-version-of-Visual-Basic
to Java source code converter. Obviously this is no simple
matter.
Blackbird and the so-called Microsoft vs. Netscape battle
are no joke. Look to the future. Do you want the majority
of computer users to have Microsoft running their lives,
via a Blackbird oriented, Microsoft dominated Internet,
with those who wish to access the power of the Net
being forced to do so via totally proprietary MS software
running on MS Windows, on an Intel driven PC. Would
you like Microsoft to have that much influence over your
life?
Java is good because it's open and free. Blackbird won't
be one little bit. Blackbird is appealing because it
appears to the masses to provide a safe, fully supported
environment with a safe, supported, and easy to use
implementation language - Visual Basic.
Java must come up with a way to combat Blackbird in these
respects or we risk losing a significant amount of freedom
to Microsoft.
