   Announcing the Beta Release of the Java(tm) Developers Kit 
   ____________________________________________________________  

We're pleased to announce the availability of the 1.0 Beta release
of the Java Developers Kit (JDK).


New features:
-------------
	- Support for Windows NT and Windows 95
	- Bug fixes
	- New image-handling features, such as JPEG support
	- New Applet Viewer security modes
	- API improvements and additions

Macintosh (MacOS 7.5): 1.0 FCS targeted for early 1996.  We are unable 
to commit to any intermediate alpha or beta release dates at this time.
Please check our web site (http://java.sun.com) for updates.

The JDK helps you to:
---------------------
	- Develop applets that conform to the final applet API
	- Convert existing 1.0 Alpha 3 applets 
        - Create applets that run in all Java-enabled browsers
	- Develop Java applications
	- Experiment with the new debugger API (and a prototype 
	  command-line debugger) 

NOTE: The Beta JDK release does NOT include a Web browser.
 
How to get the JDK:
-------------------
	1. Download the JDK from one of the following places:

	   ftp://java.sun.com/pub/JDK-beta-solaris2-sparc.tar.Z
	   ftp://java.sun.com/pub/JDK-beta-win32-x86.exe

	   Or this mirror site:
	   
	   ftp://www.blackdown.org/pub/Java/pub/JDK-beta-solaris2-sparc.tar.Z
	   ftp://www.blackdown.org/pub/Java/pub/JDK-beta-win32-x86.exe

	   	Note: The java.sun.com server at Sun is frequently
		swamped with requests. Using a mirror site may be faster. 
		Additional mirror sites will have the new release in the 
		next few days.

	2. Read the README document accompanying the release.

	   	The README explains the basic steps involved in 
		converting,debugging, and running applets.
