Check out java.net.Socket, it is pretty uncooked.

In principle yes, but this stuff is pretty much the same
as it was in in alpha3 we are still hoping to clean this up
a lot. The protocol should be in sun.net.www.protocol. I don't
think anyone has tried this with the JDK.
