I'm presently using a modification of Pat Niemeyer's IRC client to talk
to a new Virtual Institute Network we're developing (for mathematical
science communication). The client for VIN is written in Java and talks
to a modified IRC server (with almost trivial extensions to the standard
protocols), and provides a blackboard (ie whiteboard) capability,
and will soon provide animation and other facilities important to
physicists and mathematicians. Graphics are rough (I'm waiting on the
beta release of Java for the new awt classes, as I don't want to waste
time reinventing the wheel), and everything is alpha, but feel free to
play :). It's all at http://www.math.unb.ca/java/vin.html.

			cheers,
				Steve
