PRISONER WAS DIRECTED TO MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES
To the Editor [Danbury, CT News-Times]:
I am serving a federal prison sentence for mail fraud, which
consisted of unpaid invoices for merchandise ordered, including computer
software. This was ordered for my business, which was in severe financial
difficulties as the result of large embezzlement losses.
During the first year of my imprisonment, I was a teacher in the
education department of the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury.
Throughout that year I was directed to make illegal copies of software for
use within the institution, for use by other institutions, and for personal
use by prison staff. Much of this software came from the very same companies
that I was accused of defrauding by ordering software on credit and not
paying the bills. Who is the greater criminal?
It is ironic that my sentence placed me in this position, and I
wonder what moral purpose is served by sentencing me to commit crimes against
the very victims of my allegedd crime. The victims don't know that their
software is being stolen by the government -- if the choose to ship on a
"bill me later" basis without making a credit check, they are taking the risk
of nonpayment with their eyes open.
