Now that you've read the original, here's the hacked version. (It loses
something without the comparison to the original.)
---------------
"In the W20 Athena cluster the users have, perhaps, behaved slightly
better since the net police were introduced.... In the cluster, the net
police maintain a kind of order...at best the users seem strangely
subdued or off-color. Although they are aware of the net police, they
don't want to look at them, they don't want to catch their eye. They
don't want to think about them. For the net police are a thousand feet
tall, and covered in pagers and cellular phones, toting root instances
and machine room combinations, perl and shell scripts, and fizzing with
bits on AFS servers, moira, dialups. Curiously enough, they are not
looking at the users at all...they are looking at each other.
"A silence starts to fall across the cluster. The login session has not
been going on for very long and must last until the end of the term.
Already the users are weepy and feverish. They all feel sick and want
to go home."
