Actually, my secretarial experience me has suggested a new way to handle
this problem: for the salutation, just write "Dear Professor". If you're
writing to someone whose name is not clearly a man's or woman's name,
write "Dear Prof. J. P. Sipbadmin" or whatever.
Even if the recipient *isn't* a professor, who would complain about such
a mistake?
