In 198[456], _The Atlantic Monthly_ ran a cover story on the
difficulties of translating the Bible into English. _The Living
Bible_ (also sold as _The Book_) was cited as an exceptionally
*bad* translation. Bower didn't bother to translate from the
original Hebrew and Greek, or even from the traditional second
hand texts, like the Latin Vulgate and the Greek Septuagint.
Instead, he read through a pile of other English translations,
and where they disagreed, he simply chose whichever interpretation
he liked best.
