bjaspan (Barr3y Jaspan):
DEAR MISS MANNERS -- My stepson is going to be married this spring. My
husband's two ex-wives will be there. Am I required to speak or be civil
to these gargoyles?
It is going to be a small home wedding, so there will be no graceful
way of avoiding the two.
GENTLE READER -- Absolutely, Miss Manners requires that you be civil
and speak to all the guests at the wedding. Unless, of course, your
object is to inform everyone present that your husband is in the
unfortunate habit of marrying nothing but gargoyles.

Ken Thompson has an automobile which he helped design. Unlike most
automobiles, it has neither speedometer, nor gas gage, nor any of the
numerous idiot lights which plague the modern driver. Rather, if the
driver makes any mistake, a giant "?" lights up in the center of the
dashboard. "The experienced driver", he says, "will usually know
what's wrong."

Desperado...
Why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences
For so long, now.
Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you've got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow.
Don'tcha draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet.
Well, it seems to me some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones
That you can't get..
Desperado...
Oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home.
And freedom--oh, freedom
Well, that's just some people talkin'..
Your prison is walkin' through this world all alone.
Desperado...
Why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences
Open the gate
It may be rainin'
But there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you
(Let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you
Before it's too
Late....

Hey dudes,
Here's a correction. My screw up with the army in Kiel effected Russia's
moves last turn. After discussing this with the leaders of both Russia and
Germany this is what has turned up. The corrected moves are starred twice
(**). If anyone has any problems with this, let me know. I'll consider them,
although I don't see what those problems might be.
Anyway, this is the setup now.

But if you don't like what they're going to do
You better not stop them 'cause they're coming through

SENET, for some reason (and with far too few exceptions) feels that it
stands apart from the laws of the land, except when they're convenient.
One of these days this will probably backfire, but since I carefully keep
myself out of range, I'm not sure I care any more.
If you want to argue with the idiots, be my guest. Buy cough drops. They
help when the voice gives out.

FYI: A vortex, in aviation terms, is the airflow behind a plane. The
bigger the plane, the bigger the Vortex. To give you an idea, the vortex
from a Cessna is big enough to topple an ultralight. The vortex from
a 747 is big enough to topple a Cessna....

Heard (I was involved) on the radio last night:
Houston Apprch: "Cessna 448, traffic 5 o'clock 3000, will be overtaking you.
Verify altitude."
Me: "Roger, negative contact, level 2500."
Houston Apprch: "Roger, Mooney 12345, traffic 11 o'clock 2500, is a Cessna
150."
Mooney: "Negative contact, looking."
[...a few minutes pass..]
Approach: "Cessna 448, traffic now right above you, 11 o'clock, 1/2
mile."
Me: "Roger, traffic in sight...think he wants to race?"
Approach: "I think you'd lose."
Me: "What makes you say that?"
Approach: "Just a hunch...American XXX turn heading 160, maintain 2000
until established on the approach, cleared for ILS 12R.
Contact tower on 118.9."
American XXX: "American XXX, 160, maintain 2 until established, cleared for
ILS 12R, tower on 118.9...hey, we don't need to land right
now, think that Cessna still wants to race?"
[...a few seconds pass with silence...]
Approach: [clear laughter in background, controller trying to hold
it under his breath] "Ah, American XXX, somehow I just
don't think he'd be able to keep up. Does the expression
'not a snowball's chance' ring a bell?"
American XXX: "No, but 'VORTEX' does"

Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring
Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To flutter-and the Bird is on the Wing.
Whether at Naishapur or Babylon,
Whether the Cup with sweet or bitter run,
The Wine of Life keeps oozing drop by drop,
The Leaves of Life keep falling one by one.
