It think you're a little over-optimistic. Not on the hardware
end, but in "run all of the Athena software". Or at least information
out of official channels has been very discouraging regarding the
prospects of Athena-ish stuff on IBM PCs.
Though Athena always paid lip service to the idea of providing
every student with workstation (I was one of the most utopian
projections), it had nothing to do with the fall in hardware prices, and
a great deal of what we think of as Athena seems still a aways off from
PCs and Macs. For example, when will a user be able to access (with
Kerberos authentication) their Athena locker from a Mac or a PC? (not
via dialup, natively).
