I took a long walk this afternoon to Auburn cemetery. I sat under
a tree, lay on the grass, looked up at the branches and the sky,
listened to the birds. This visit to nature was really important to me.
As I walked back, everything looked different. Partly it was the
afternoon sun; I always see the Charles in the morning. But also it was
that peaceful feeling from the bluff across from Osceola.

[1991 - I always saw the Charles in the morning rowing crew. The bluff
across from Osceola is a place I went once during high school when I
felt like everything was going wrong. Looking across helped me see how
small and transitory my problems were.]

therese (Therese):

I sit, by myself, among friends
reaching out to touch those beyond my feeble reach
              spending time caring for people...
                  whom I may never meet
      Sharing a myriad of emotions...
As ephemeral as those I share them with
Hearing sighs and laughter with no voices...
feeling warmth in hugs that have no arms...
              seeing smiles on imaginary faces
distance shrinks, and for a brief moment...
                      we are one as friends...
                          more than friends...
                              family..

Last night, I was flying home from Des Moines, via Denver, on United.
As usual, they had the ATC communications on channel 9 (hooray!).

The ride at 35,000 was rough, and our co-pilot requested lower from ATC.
For the next few minutes, things were pretty entertaining:

United 989: Minneapolis center, United 989 requests lower.
Center: United 989, descend and maintain flight level 310.
989: Roger, United 989 is out of 35 for 31.

<We descend to 31,000 feet. But when it comes time to
level off, I feel the airplane climb again for a bit,
                 then descend again>

Center: 989, how's the ride there at FL 310?
989: Can't tell you yet, sir. The captain appears to be
having a bit of trouble flying the aircraft.
Center: Roger, 989. If he gets things leveled out, please
let us know how the ride is.
          989: Roger, will do.
   Our pilot?: Ouch, that hurt!
  Anonymous 1: Geez, tough co-pilot! :-)
Anonymous 2: Hope he's not on my next crew assignment! :-)

Everyone got a pretty good chuckle out of this, including the pilot. I
asked him about it on the ground, and he said that they try to keep things
lively on the flight deck -- I guess it helps keep them alert :-).
