Ames and Vassar are public roads. However, I've heard that Cambridge
WANTS to rebuild Ames St. but MIT has asked them not to because of the
disruption it would cause East Campus and Senior House.
I've noticed that as far as East Cambridge is concerned the city does
a very good job north of Charles St., which is mostly residential
(they repaved Cambridge St. about 4 years ago, they redid 5th St. a
few years ago when they installed new water pipes, although it took a
phone call to convince them to actually repave it in December because
the contractor did an atrocious job of patching it). South of Charles
St. is mostly industrial, and except for 1st St., Athenaeum, Broadway,
and Main St. it's pretty beat up and they more or less ignore it (some
of those roads are as bad as Ames, particularly around old railroad
tracks).
