alrosado (Ana L Rosado):

What lies behind us and what lies before us
are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

                  This Be the Verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad,
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can.
And don't have any kids yourself.

aras (Aras):

I think now looking back,
we did not fight the enemy. We fought ourselves,
and the enemy was in us.
The war is over for me now, but it will always be there
the rest of my days.
As I'm sure Alias will be fighting with Barnes for what Rock called
possession of my soul.
There are times since, I've felt like a child
born of those two fathers.
But be that as it may, those of us who did make it
have an obligation to build again,
to teach to others what we know,
and to try with what's left of our lives to find a goodness and meaning
to this life.

I have put your joke in the "true news" digest. This is for funny
true events, folklore, urban legends etc. that I didn't think quite deserved
a message of their own. The digest comes out irregularly, a couple of times
a year.

Thanks for your note.

Wow, on my very first try, too...

dschmidt (Dan Schmidt):

I am inhabited by a cry.
Nightly it flaps out
Looking, with its hooks, for something to love.

I am terrified by this dark thing
That sleeps in me;
All day I feel its soft, feathery turnings, its malignity.

 - Sylvia Plath

Are you the sort who can do the Sunday crossword in ink, or memorize
pi to the thousandth digit?
If you're an academic genius but a dunce at love, the Mensa high-IQ
society may be the place for you this Valentine's Day.
Lisa Trombetta of American Mensa said many of the intellectual set
have received an unexpected bonus from joining the organization: namely,
a mate.
For instance, Russ and Cookie Bakke of Orange, Calif., met through
Mensa and found that their left and right lobal hemispheres made a
pretty good match.
Russ hails from from the East, Cookie from the Midwest. The divorcees
met at a national Mensa gathering in New York City and their long-
distance courtship led to marriage five years later.
``We're a great example of how opposites attract,'' said Mrs. Bakke.
``He's strictly a left brain personality and I'm the right-brain type,
so we seem to complement each other perfectly.''
Another Mensa member, Nancy Zeiger, an Atlanta real-estate agent,
proposed to her husband, Oscar, at a Mensa meeting.
``I'd been frustrated with the dating scene before joining Mensa,''
said Oscar, who is in the home restoration business.
Nancy said that proposing to Oscar was ``the smartest move I ever
made.''
Mensa is an international organization founded in Britain in 1946.
Its name derives from the Latin word for table and, indeed, Mensa's
founders envisioned a round table of intellectual equals ``who could
solve the world's problems,'' Trombetta said.
``Since they found out everyone had a different idea of how that
could happen that objective did not stand and it's become a social
organization,'' she said.
There are now 55,000 members in the United States and about 80,000
worldwide, she said.
A 132 on the Stanford Binet, or top 2 percent of almost any other
standardized test, is all it takes to qualify for membership, Trombetta
said.

therese (Suntioinen Therese M.):

Go placidly among the noise and haste, remember what peace
there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with with all persons. Speak your truth
quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and
ignorant, they too have their story - Avoid loud and aggressive
persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare
yourself with others, there will be greater and lesser persons
than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans -
Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a
real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise
caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of
        trickery.  But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere, life is full
of heroism - Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity
and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass - Take kindly
to the counsel of they years, gracefully surrending the things
of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden
misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome
discipline, be gentle with yourself - You are a child of the
universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right
to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the
universe is unfolding as it should - Therefore be at peace with
God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors
and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with
your soul - With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is
still a beautiful world. Be careful, strive to be happy.
