amgreene (Andrew Marc Greene):

In TUGboat 11(4) [which arrived today], Don Knuth says:

The current version number of TeX is 3.1, and for Metafont it is 2.7.
If corrections are necessary, the next version of TeX will be 3.14,
then 3.141, then 3.1415, ..., converging to the ratio of a circle's
circumfrence to its diameter; for Metafont the sequence will be 2.71,
2.718, ..., converging to the base of natural logarithms. I intend to
be fully responsible for all changes to these systems for the rest of
my life. I will periodically study reports of apparent bugs, and I
will decide whether changes need to be made. Rewards will be paid to
the first finders of any true bugs, at my discretion, but I can no
longer afford to double the size of the reward each year. Whenever I
have created a new version, I will put it in the official master TeX
archive, which currently resides at Stanford University. At the time
of my death, it is my intention that the then-current versions of TeX
and Metafont be forever left unchanged, except that the final version
numbers to be reported in the ``banner'' lines of the programs should
become
			  TeX, version $\pi$
and
			METAFONT, Version $e$
respectively. From that moment on, all ``bugs'' will be permanent
``features.''

"Why did sex , that bizarre perversion of straight forward
replication ever arise in the first place? What is the good
of sex?

This is an extremely difficult question for the evolutionist
to answer. Most serious attempts to answer it involve soph-
isticated mathematical reasoning.

darford (Darlene J Ford):

Open letter to my fellow MIT students:

I have seen many of my friends become very stressed, often very
depressed and cynical in the course of their struggles with MIT. I
wish to entreat you all, or at least anyone who happens to read this,
to take heart. There are not always answers lying in our sight, but
there are reasons. I have found my confidence in this in my faith in
God. I would highly recommmend this to you, but this is, of course,
your decision. My point is to tell you that I love you, that I'm here
if you want someone to talk to, and that I have faith in our ability
to find the strength to go on. God bless you and give you strength.

Love always,
Darlene

therese (Suntioinen Therese M.):

Go placidly among the noise and haste, remember what peace
there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with with all persons. Speak your truth
quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and
ignorant, they too have their story - Avoid loud and aggressive
persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare
yourself with others, there will be greater and lesser persons
than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans -
Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a
real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise
caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of
        trickery.  But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere, life is full
of heroism - Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity
and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass - Take kindly
to the counsel of they years, gracefully surrending the things
of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden
misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome
discipline, be gentle with yourself - You are a child of the
universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right
to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the
universe is unfolding as it should - Therefore be at peace with
God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors
and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with
your soul - With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is
still a beautiful world. Be careful, strive to be happy.

					- Max Ehrman
