Intrafada Continues
Despite the Gulf crisis, the intrafada continues unabated. Last
week, five Palestinians were murdered and four more wounded. One of
them was surrounded by hundreds of people in Rafah wielding axes and
throwing stones and bricks. The man was stabbed and lynched. Nearly
250 Palestinians have now died at the hands of their fellow Arabs.
By contrast violent confrontations between Israeli forces and
Palestinians have declined significantly. Last month, only one
Palestinian died in such clashes. Assistant Secretary for Human
Rights and Humanitarian Affairs {\sc Richard Schifter} credited
Defense Minister Moshe Arens' policies for the drop in casualties
during his visit to Jerusalem in mid-August.
