Worms
The worms are long and fat this year. They stretch
across my daughter's hands, tasting the sun
while I dig up their tunnels. As I reach
the fence that beans will climb, she plays with one
curling around her fingers. Sifted soil
grows tan as breeze and sunlight dry and warm
its cold wet black. My daughter moves her coil
from thumb to palm and back, then digs the worm
a hole. It burrows through the now soft earth
as she and I both watch. When autumn comes,
the squash will ripen here, tomatoes there;
but first comes summer, hazy heat and hums
of bees and drifting clouds while set fruit firms.
And, after harvest, husks shall feed the worms.
