Hi again,
Someone pointed out that I was not the perfect boothworker,
and that is fair, it is tough to give it your all when 99% of the
passers by don't seem to care. That's the other reason you should
only stand in front of the booth if you have someone sitting behind
it; when you are feeling beaten down, that person can cheer you up,
remind you it is for a good cause, and even swap places with you.
With practice, you won't find it hard to stand up for what you think
is right--and that first time is always the hardest.
And why is it I sound like a complainer, having all these
great ideas AFTER all the planning meetings? Two reasons. First,
like all of you, I was busy. I had tons of things on my mind when I
worked the booth, I had to rush to do a ton of things beforehand.
That is, I was feeling so pressed I couldn't have calmly reflected on
the situation had I wanted to. I left that booth feeling vaguely
frustrated, but I couldn't necessarily say way. In fact, it even took
me four drafts to produce what I did email: new ideas pop up at random
times.
Second, I did give a few ideas beforehand. Some may have been
relevant, some may not have been. Overall, I thought that I was so
busy with other things that I would have wasted the committee's time
with my potential flakiness rather than have been a help. I thought
these lessons had been learned by talking to alums who worked highly
successful UMOCs and learned from recent Big Screw and UMOC events.
Third, TELL YOUR FRIENDS about UMOC. If they don't have time,
ask for a dollar and put a quarter in each jar for them if they don't
have someone they want to vote for.
