Anne-Marie, and everyone else,

I will be here this summer. Furthermore, I like to build
things and especially out of scrap wood: I hate to waste, and not all
my projects look as makeshift as you might think. So, two things:
I'd like to see the office begin to recycle more; we throw out
cardboard and plastic and glass; I've seen these all in the trashcan.
If I am the only one who wants to bother taking this stuff somewhere
to get properly recycled, then I'll do it, but, of course, I'd like
anyone's help. I'll see what I can't get set up in the next few
weeks.

Back to building things: every year, most of the residents in
Tang move out, since it is for first year students only. Many of
these people throw out a lot of things that are either barely used,
unused, or salvagable for parts. For example, I just rescued some
wood that once was a nice set of drawers with a cabinet. Ok, it isn't
real wood and it wasn't too nice, it is the usual cheap fiberboard
that I can't stand, but I will use it to make shelves for some
cabinets I'm planning on building for my girlfriend. The custodian
who helped me carry this stuff up to my room, he says he sees all
manner of wood and clothing and kitchenware. He says he has a TV and
VCR for every room in his house, and that yesterday he essentially
stocked a friend's kitchen with new plates, toaster, cups, saucers,
etc.
*IF* I can get a group of volunteers to daily check for and
carry away things, I can ask the building staff to allow him to set
these sorts of things aside for us. However, we must always appear on
time (sometime before this guy has to close up and go home) anytime he
finds things. My guess is we will find more than enough wood to build
cabinets and shelves, and electronics to re-outfit the office: a lot
of the students are here from overseas for just one year and it costs
them more to ship things home, so they throw them out or leave them.

Anyone want to help?

Take care, in LFS,
Brad L.
