 Hi everyone,

So it seems as if I've been nominated for many positions.
Firstly, thank you for having the confidence in me to nominate me for
President, MVP, SVP and ApocEd. It always makes me feel good to
know that there are people who have trust and faith in my abilities.

I suppose, since I've been nominated for 4 positions I should tell you
why I accepted the nominations and what I think each job entails. I
apologize now for the length of this letter, but I have a tendency to
wax philosophical about these things :)

The President is the torch bearer of APO. It is through the president
that APO finds it's direction. The president, above all, needs to
embody the values of Leadership, Friendship and Service that APO holds
true. Brothers look to the president for inspiration, now I knowthat
sounds lofty, but it's true, if the president works his/her butt off
for the chapter, the other brothers will be inspired to do the same.
But the President must not be overbearing about it. The President
must simply represent APO whereever he/she goes. This officer needs
to be there for the brothers. All jobs are actually the job of
president. True, they have been delegated out to MVP, SVP, etc, but
they are also the concern of the president. This does not mean that
the president has to do all these jobs, but he/she has to be willing
help, to make sure that everyone has what they need to be effective,
to be there for all the other officers and the other brothers. Then
the president needs to know when to step away and let APO run as APO
will. The president needs to lead by example. He/she needs to know
when to speak, and when to stay silent. Yes there is the paperwork
responsibility that also goes along with the job, but even more than
that, there is the responsibility to AX to lead APO with care for a
semester. I think I can do this. I believe that I can inspire others
to work hard for the chapter. I know I would give the job my all.

The MVP needs to be personable, and have the time and energy to devote
to the pledges. He/she needs to be willing to impart the ideals of
APO onto the pledges, but also give them the space and room to freely
decide if APO is for them. It's a balancing act, the MVP need to know
when to nudge the pledges and when to stand back and let the pledges
figure out APO for themselves. The MVP also needs to be there for the
pledges, to answer their questions and to give them support as they
begin their lives in APO. I think I could be the type of MVP that is
there for the pledges but that also gives them space. I feel that I
am personable, and that the pledges would like me, respect me and
think that I'm a fun person to hang out with. Hopefully the pledges
would feel comfortable enough with me to feel that they could come to
me with their problems and issues, whether they were issues with APO
or MIT. I think I would be there for them.

The SVP, in my opinion, the most important officer position. What is
APO without giving service to others? The SVP must, above all else,
be responsible. Responsible to the brothers by providing them with
projects that they can do through out the semester. Responsible to
the organizations and people that we provide service to by always
making follow up phone calls...by always making sure that we can do
the work they need us to do and by getting a clear description of the
work required. Our fraternity is based on service, to others and
ourselves. Without a strong service program, we will turn into just
another social fraternity. While there is nothing wrong with
friendship, and nothing wrong with socializing, we also value
leadership and service. The office of SVP is devoted to giving us the
opportunity to lead through serving the community. I have spent the
majority of my live voluntering in the New York area. I have spent
the last 7 years or show voluntering in New England. I have organized
hundreds of service projects for my church and friends. Before
joining APO, I voluntered independently with many of the organizations
that we work with. I know the community, I am responsible, I think I
could pick and create many projects for us throughout the semester.
In addition, I think I could also convince brothers to attend the
projects I generated.

As historian, I have realized the value of APOc. How do we know what
has happened before? How do we remember great events? There is the
oral record, there is the historical cruft, but there is also the
APOc. It is the way that we record the events that happen in the life
of APO, so that the brothers that come behind us can know who we were
adn what we did. When you write for the APOc, you truly write for
history. Even if you are simply putting in poem, or describing an
event. Someone will read it. Someone will care. You will go dowm in
AX history. And that's important. The APOcEd is the cronicler of the
chapter. The APOcEd needs to collect the stories of the chapter and
set them down. APOcEd is aa very important and quite serious job.
The APOc doesn't need to come out every week, or even every two weeks,
but it needs to come out regularly. We have a flame book in the
office. People hang out in the office all the time. We need a APOc
book in the office, so that poeple can write stories there as well.
Yes, I know there is email, but sometimes it is easier to get people
to sit on the comfy couch and write an article. Yes it's more work
for the editor, but there is no reason that the editor can't have an
assistant. I think that I could be a good editor, I think that I would
bring new ideas to the APOc, I know that I could give the life to the
APOc that it deserves.

So, I've been nominated for 4 positions. I guess I should tell you my
order of preference. While I would be happy to accept any position, I
personal preference is President, MVP, SVP, APOcEd.

I hope this helps some of you in making your decision. See you on Tuesday!

YiLFS,

Ann-Marie

JEff--> my candidate article is enclosed below. if it too late for it
to be included in teh apoc, then please just email it to apo-news

Why I want to be MVP

I am running for the position of Membership Vice President to begin to
give back to the chapter what it has done for me. I want to contribute
as much as I can, and the recruitment of a new set of brothers "imbued
with the spirit of alpha chi" will make a big difference. I really do
love this chapter, and I want to see it prosper. I am good at training
new members and bringing people into the chapter-->just ask my littles,
or the current freshmen that I introduced to APO. I care; and will work
very hard to make next term's fall pledge class a successful one. I
will work to get people that we can retain, that will stay in apo and
keep our chapter vigorous. I will be here over the summer, and plan to
do a very active rush; with fellowship events, service projects, and
picnics following service projects. I'll get in a rush mailing, get a
thursday night dinner group, and have widely publicized pledge
ceremonies. Also, ari's idea of going out and actually CALLING on the
phone or trying to contact each person that signed up on our sheet at
the activities midway seemed to help a lot; and I plan to do that too.
next term, I'll be taking strobe lab, management lab, and
network security. it shouldn't be a hard load for me at all. I want to
make a lasting impression, a difference in the chapter; and I believe
this is the best way for me to do it. Now it's your chance to decide.
See you at Elections!

Yours in Leadership, Friendship, and Service,

Jill Pelavin

Okay, so I'm running for APOcEd. I'd like to see the APOc
come out regularly and be full of useful stuff, and I think
I can do that.

I'm not going to claim I'm the only qualified candidate for
the job, or anything silly like that, but I'd like to help
the chapter and I think being APOcEd is something that I
can do. (I don't feel really qualified for a senior office
right now.)

Let's see... I can handle \LaTeX, so the technical side of
things won't be a problem. I know I haven't been as active
this term as I should have been, but I think that a
responsibility like this will make me more active, not more
likely to punt. If I get elected, I'm going to try to stay
relatively unhosed, although I will be taking 6.035
(compilers, woohoo), and a couple of other classes in the
fall. (I've applied for the MEng program, and that will
take away some of the pressure to try to take all the cool
classes all at once.)

I know the APOc seems to be always desperate for articles,
and I don't claim to have the magical solution to that
problem, but I'm certainly open to suggestions. I think
soliciting people personally for articles and being willing
to dig up stuff which can be used to fill in when articles
don't get written are good ideas. You don't really want me
to do a weekly/biweekly/monthly editorial on "What Service
Means to Me", I don't think, but I do think there are other
things that could be included in the APOc. There have got
to be enough announcements, bits of history, stuff from
nationals (I don't know this, but I assume that nationals
sends us a newsletter or {\em something} that could/should
be excerpted and forwarded on to the chapter), and other
things that could be put in when the more usual stuff is
missing.

I suppose frequency of publication of the APOc is another
topic for discussion. I think I could manage to get an
issue out every two weeks at the beginning of the term
(preferably just before or after chapter meeting so that
people could collect their copies or be bugged for articles
then), and realistically it would slip to once per month
towards the end of the term. I think it's important for
the APOc to come out regularly and fairly frequently, but I
don't really see an issue every week as being a realistic
goal given the number of articles that usually get
submitted. (Plus, I think email is more effective for
announcements, etc. that need to be distributed quickly.)

So, that's all I need to say. Have fun at elections. :-)

YiLFS,

Sara

Why APO wants me for SVP, and why I want to Serve

So, its the amazing dynamic Pipa letting you know that I want to serve
the most excellent AX chapter of APO as its Service Vice
President. (please please don't make me spend lotsa money on silly
campaign posters and buttons and balloons)

Seriously. I joined APO because of the community service it does. I
firmly believe that fellowship through service is most rewarding and
definitely the way to go. I found that the uniting force of service was
lacking in my own Sorority, and found that uniting force in APO. Now
that I am older and hopefully more wiser, I feel I can be the strength
of this force guiding it to new places and new types of service.

Specifically, I want to expand the service projects to include very
worthwhile yet more people orientated projects. Through my
circumstances with ex-boyfriends, I have come in contact with many abuse
and battered women's shelters. Also, having done both CityDays and
CityYear programs, I feel that there are a lot of untapped resources
that I can use to further and strengthen the service program at APO.

Having talked to the two previous SVPs about our service program, there
seems to be one current problem, that of project attendance. I would
like to help with that problem for APO has great strength and not to
utilize it serving others seems a waste. Since I think there are many
causes to low attendance, I offer to the chapter my varied, multi-part
solution.

* Bring back phone calling (and I personally will help).
* Contacting non-active brothers and inviting them to serve on
projects.
* Get most projects planned very early, and have PCs for them
(perhaps with announcements in our beloved APOc).
* Check upon PCs to offer help/assistance.
* Unofficially polling members of the chapter as to the relative
coolness/uncoolness of the projects.

So, this is generally my ideas for the office of Service Vice
president. I would also like to persuade and convince and prove that I
am truly worthy of the task before me as a potential SVP. Hopefully I
can address issues that possibly will evolve in a closed meeting - and
give answers to nagging doubts.

Just for the record I am NOT course 6. [no one seems to believe me
though] Actually, I am destined to be a course 10 senior next year. The
classes I will be taking are:

ICE: 2 modules
10.27: Processes Lab
Humanity: depending on what is offered

YES! I am only taking three classes. "why?" you might be asking. WEll,
here is the scoop. Pipa is not way graduating on time. So, I have the
freedom to light load a little bit, especially with the difficult
material that ICE offers.

My class load should not be a problem because I believe that most, if
not the entire Service calendar should be done over the summer. (yes, I
am around this summer working in good ol' N42.) Especially since Dead
Week should have at minimum three service projects, with which to
attract prospectives.

My past experience with APO offices, as Publicity Director and as the
Editor of the Newsletter, has allowed me to know firsthand how Execcomm
works, as well as the trials facing the officers. Some of you might
question this past term for me, in that I felt necessary to allow
another to take over my office. The reason was Depression. It is a
very serious illness, and I can only tell you that I am getting better,
quickly. For example, most people stay on anti-depressants for at least
six months. I was taken off them after only three weeks. However,
because I am not fully healed, I am going to be seeing my shrink at MIT
medical once a week for the rest of this term, and about once a month
after that.

NOt only do I have my illness (yes, it is an illness, on that people
should be acutely aware of) under control, but I feel that I have
resources to turn to if being SVP gets a little unmanageable. I live
with two former SVPs who can certainly give me advice, and more
significantly I am not afraid to ask for help when I truly need it. And
I don't mean to flash Depression in people's faces, but I can bet a
thousand dollars that someone will mention it in closed meeting. I am
also quite sure that there are few, if no one in the chapter who truly
knows what it is, and how it is managed. Thus people will be making
judgments on me because of something no one understands. That is why I
strive to explain. (if anyone wants to ask me personally about it, I am
totally there...) So, vote PIPA for SVP!
