Sorry about this taking so long, but I have
been so busy these last few weeks.

                               APOcrypha
                           Volume 86, Issue 7
                          Monday, May 5, 1997
                              Spring 1997

Letter from the Editor

Ah yes. Once again its the apoc. Man can you believe this is the 7th
issue this term? Well, I am having trouble believing it even though I
have so far produced all of them mostly on my own time and energy. The
article turnout hasn't been terribly impressive, but again, I think
it hasn't been all too bad either, considering that there have been
articles for every apoc that has come out so far.

Well, if you can believe it, there will be two more (yes, that's 2)
apoc's coming out before this term is over. I am sure you are probably
sitting there scratching your head wondering where I am going to put
two more apocs. Well, I have thought this trhough, and here is my plan
for the last two. Issue 8 is going to come out next week, and the
only things I expect to have in it are end of term things like the
minutes that haven't come out already and incoming/outgoing officer
reports if officers are efficient and get them written up in time.

The 9th and final issue for my term as Apoc Ed will be the Apocrypha,
Special Edition. If you somehow managed to not hear about this from me
before, here it is again. This will be a compilation of previously
released articles with new special effects and new wordings never seen
before (Again, if you are thinking of parodies and other silly humor
like things, you are on the right track).

I am not necessarily asking for anyone to submit any articles for
this, because in theory at least you will all be studying for
finals. But you are welcome to submit any humor stuff you want plus if
you want to hack on previously released articles (as I plan to), they
are in /mit/jefreypu/apoc/issue where the is the issue
number. Feel free to toy around if you have any free time. Anyhow, I
am planning on just trying to make the last apoc a little something
special and kind of fun. This Apoc of course will be available at I
Banquet, so keep your eyes open for the Apocrypha, Special Edition.

Jeffrey

Why I Want To Be ApocEd (maybe) by David Maze

I somehow managed to survive an entire year of MIT on pass/fail. It
was actually kind of fun. But now I'll have to deal with scary things
like grades and actually put some effort into tooling to try to get
actual good grades.

With that in mind, I think being ApocEd would be a good job for me. I
tend to spend too many of my waking hours logged in anyways; having to
assemble an Apoc would give me something productive to do. I have
decent amounts of and clue, and a somewhat minimal but
usable amount of PostScript clue. I was a page editor for my school
newspaper in high school; having layout features besides just articles
one after another in the Apoc would be cool.

How hosed will I be? I'll be taking 6.001, which I'm presently
regarding as relatively trivial, and 6.004, plus 8.01 (yes, freshman
physics) and a HASS, probably STS.011 (American Science: Ethical
Conflicts and Political Choices). I'll also be the E bus
chair and likely an LSC night subdirector. That alone might be enough
to completely hose me; I don't know. Right now, I'm planning on
putting out six Apocs, not so many to kill me but not so few that
people forget they exist.

The bottom line is that I'm not all that sure whether I want to be
ApocEd or not, and whether or not it's a good idea for me to take any
A office this term. I do intend to stay active within the
chapter regardless, but I'm worried that if I try to do too much then
something will have to suffer. I don't know what the best thing for
me to do is. If I do have an office, though, I want to be ApocEd.

Why I really really really want to be AVP by melissa

So most people would begin here with a beautiful heartwarming story of
their reasons for wanting to be AVP...epic tales of desires to serve
one's brotherhood, of being an asset to the chapter, of selflessly
giving of oneself, blah blah blah, blah blah blah.

While these are VERY admirable reasons for serving as AVP, I have
another much more...uh...carnal reason for my desire.

I want nothing more that the right to approach my haven on the fifth
floor of the student center...that golden gem on the horizon of my
existence...the CAC office...so that I may lay down on the altar
before those gods among men..er, I mean those CAC desk workers, my
offering of...an orange room reservation form. Ooh! I'm getting
goosebumps just THINKING about it!

While I admit that there is much more to the job of AVP than just
communicating with CAC (BTW, did I mention that I have contacts
there?), I would traverse the broadest desert, take minutes at the
longest meeting, and yes, wrestle with the goddess Athena herself for
the mere hope of making a pilgrimage to my mecca and bowing to Ted
Johnson and Phil Walsh.

I'd type out minutes and keep the office stocked with sign-up lists
and I'd publish a chapter directory et cetera et cetera et cetera ad
nauseum just for chance to be a genuine ASA signatory power.

If you have any questions about my goals as AVP, or if you'd care to
offer your take on "what it means to be AVP" feel free to ask or
e-mail me.

So give my life meaning. Vote for me for AVP. And stuff.

It'll be a blessed awwangement, a dweam, within a dweam...  It'll be
better than CATS!

Melissa

Gina for a Junior Office

Now that I have your attention, I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY
TO ANNOUNCE MY CANTIDACY FOR PRESIDENT IN THE YEAR 2000!!! My
justification for such an early announcement is that I need time to
raise the millions of dollars necessary to manage a sucessful
campaign. Please make legal donations to the account of Gina Nicholls
and illeagle contributions to the account of my evil twin, Monique.

Seriously, make ALL checks payable to Gina. Also, remember to vote me
into the office of historian in the fall (hey, my plot to tyrranize
the world needs to start somewhere). I had planned to run for the
office this term, but discovered quickly that I wouldn't have time to
handle the commitment. I'm still as dedicated to the chapter as I was
in the fall, and I believe that I am well prepared to handle an office
next year. I volunteered for ArcCom last term and talked to Charlie
about the role of the historian over IAP. I also intend to get an
updated version from Brian Perrin before next term; please ask me
about this during junior office elections next year.

You might think that this is a little early for junior officer
campaigns, but if I get my two cents in now, it might save me (and
you) a million down the road.

- Gina

Momma? ... Clunk. ... Ow! Bad Pledge!

So why would I want to subject myself to the hosage of being MVP this
upcomig term? Because I'm Susama and masochistic, and enjoy fillng
myschedule to double capacity and going crazy? Actually, no.
Contrary to popular belief I have taken into consideration the amount
of time and energy that this will take, and how it will affect me and
my classes. And I won't be getting into anything any father over my
head than I normally am. I'm not taking anything next term that I
foresee as being exceptionally more time consuming than anything else
MIT seems to offer, as opposed to next year when I will disappear
under the pressures of Junior lab.

I realize that another set back to me being Mommy next term is that
I've only been an active brother for one term. I know what me level
of ignorance is, and intend to grill brothers for advice when I lack
clue and fail to compensate via reckless ingenuity. I would really
like to be able to work with the incoming freshmen though, which is
why I am rashly running this term, instead of waiting, like any normal
person would do.

I believe that a strong, well indoctrinated pledge class can do a lot
for a chapter. This may be because my pledge class was large, and I
felt that we were well prepared, and as a result I enjoyed my pledge
term. I believe strongly in good big little connections and getting
the pledges as involved as is possible. I intend to have big/little
connections set up early in the term, and intend also to keep strong
relations between myself and the pldeges. I hope to be able to
organize several pledge run/oriented service projects/fellowship
events, so that they get a good feel for the chapter by the time they
are elevated.

I may be biting off more than I can handle, or I may have time to do
more than this. None of what I propose here is written in stone. I
hope to be able to do all this, and more (maybe). I would love to get
involved with the chapter in this manner, and I think I can do a good
job at it. I had a very helpful mommy my pledge term, and I would
like to see if I can't practise what I saw and learned.

Laura's Article for SVP and Fellowship Chair

So, this is short because I want to have time both to finish my
paper and to look at 6.001. I'm running for SVP and for Fellowship
Chair.

So, why would Laura make a good fellowship chair, you may be
wondering. Well, I'll tell you. I like fellowship stuff because it's
fun. And it makes me sad when people aren't around much. And I like
beginning sentences with the word and I like beginning sentences with
the word and...

I'll admit I am a little bit afraid of SVP because I don't like to use
the phone. But I would do it. That reminds me that I have to go call
the idiots who didn't come to inspect our fire exstinguishers at ET.
So I should go now. Bye-bye!

- Laura

A little more on why I want to be MVP

Well, I read a little of an article that Dave sent to me (Requirements
for Officers, by Dave Cho, later in this issue), and I think that Dave
made some very good points (Dave always does. Its too bad that we
don't have him around as much anymore to give us hell like he always
used to :).

To put it simply, Dave points out that we all have really different
things we are good at, and its kind of best to do whatever it is you
do best. Well, I have served a number of offices that I have had
varying degrees of sucess with. Historian, I did ok. But I sometimes
forgot to bring the camera along to things, and there was too much
work for me to do alone. Fellowship Chair, I made sure the fellowship
events things happened, had a number of good study breaks, and had fun
at I Banquet, even when we left the last tray of pasta in the oven too
long. AVP I thought I did pretty well at, except for being mildly
hosed near the end of term. Apoc Ed I have enjoyed a great deal and I
think they have turned out very well, even if the pickings for
articles have been slim at times.

Now I am up for MVP. I am still talking with the people that have been
MVP in previous terms, and I am still thinking over the different
approaches that I might take at handling this job. But I do know a few
things.

I know the chapter well. I have been a brother now since the
spring of 94, a full three years now, and through that time I have had
a lot of experiences with the chapter, and I feel ready to pass on
that info to new pledges. I am only asking for the chance to do it.

I can deal with the time this job requires. I have been through
a number of offices now, and really I have never had a serious problem
furfilling the duties of any office that I was given the duties
of. Although I tend to get hosed just like everyone else, I have
learned the ways to balance my life so that the things that need to
get done do, even if its not by me.

I am very open and willing to listen to other's ideas. I have
never been the kind of person who thinks that I instantly know the
right way and am certain that I know better than others. I often in
fact ask for advice on what to do about things from other people. In
fact, this is the whole basis behind a lot of my closest friendships
with people both inside and outside the chapter.

I am a very reachable person. This may not seem true to
everyone, but I am very approachable, and I enjoy talking to people a
great deal both in person, through zephyr, email, or through the
phone. I also carry a pager, so I am usually pretty reachable even
away from home, and I usually get back to people pretty immediately.

I believe I can do this job. This is to say that I am not just
running for this office because I want to but also because I believe
that if I am elected it will be a job that I will actually put my
efforts into. Sometimes the amount of success that an MVP gets varies
despite how much work they do, but I still feel the desire to try and
put my efforts for a term toward gaining our chapter new membership.

Well, this was just something to add on to what I have written
before. If you haven't read that, there are extra apocs in the office,
or you can of course always talk to me and ask me anything I haven't
really talked about here, which I am sure that there is.

YiLFS,
Jeffrey

Brian for Fellowship Chair

Hi, it's me, Brian (the one from West campus), and I'm running for
Fellowship Chair, and I think it would be really cool if you all
decided to vote for me. Here's why:

1) Fellowship: Well, it is part of being the fellowship chair, so it's
an important one. I intend to maintain chapter fellowship levels by
continuing to hold such age old traditions as Steak Fry, SFF, and
I-Banquet. Also, I'd like to try to reintroduce a few new/unused
ideas, such as picnics after projects, a
Look-There's-Snow-On-The-Ground study break (assuming we get snow
before Christmas), a Look-There's-Hot-Chocolate-Inside study break
(both of these last two stolen from the FC elections last term), a
movie marathon study break, and the continuation of
regular/semi-regular dinner trips.

2) Membership Retention: Yes, wonderful ideas on how to keep the
brothers from going away so that at SFF when they show up for 5
minutes all of the new brothers don't look at them and then ask the
older brothers who those odd people are standing off in the corner who
they'd never seen before. We'll start with Shave-The-Pledge-Bald-Day
(no, wait, I can't do that, can I?). OK, instead I'll use the big
brothers mercilessly, bugging them as to the status of their missing
littles and whether so-and-so will be returning later in the term or
just dropping out. Or even better, I'll bug the littles to check up
on their bigs if their bigs start fading away from the chapter.
Basically, this system makes the impossibly huge task of finding all
of the missing brothers and interrogating them to my satisfaction a
somewhat more bearable burden.  :)

3) Pledges: I know, it's largely the Mommy's job to trap the
unsuspecting pledges, but every Mommy needs a hand from time to time.
So then I come dashing onto the scene with a Fellowship event. Some
wild and wacky event should be held during the beginning of the term
to draw pledges. And at some point soon after pledging, the
Big-Little study break will have to happen of course.

4) Hosage: Bah, I'll never be hosed. But there are probably some who
doubt the authenticity of my statements. Well, I'll be taking 6.004,
a Hass/Hass-D class, two other classes (as of yet undetermined), and
maybe a seminar type class. That's a total of four real classes. I
don't have any other positions of leadership in other activities, so
there won't be any other huge time conflicts. I will, of course, be
in other activities, but it hasn't overloaded me yet, so it won't be a
problem next term, despite those yucky grade things.

5) Availability: Well, I must admit, I will not be in Boston for most
of the summer. However, I will be around for the first three weeks
afterwards, and I'll be reachable by email while I'm not in Boston.
Also, I plan on coming back early (for R/O), so as to minimize my time
spent not in planning wonderful fellowship-type events. Yes yes.

Yup yup. That's about it. If there's anything else, be sure to ask
me on Wednesday. See you all then!

- Brian

                             Misc Articles

Hiho, it's dave, the moldy alum

I have two quick points to make:

1, short apoc articles are good. Not because terseness is a virtue
(it is), but rather, it's a good idea to go back and tighten up your
wording so you don't bore your reader.

2, Jeff said in a previous article (Issue 5):

I already have a shirt that has Service on it, with the number 1 on
it, cause service is the first reason that we are in this fraternity
anyway. If we just wanted leadership and friendship,

Bah -- so you say. I joined APO for the friendship and that's why I'm
still around -- because it's fun. Sure, it was satisfying to do service
and I still help people in my own way (ditto for the leadership angle).

Is service its own reward? No, what a ridiculous idea. The fun, warm,
fuzzy feeling from doing service is its own reward. These statements
should not be confused. People do things because they're fun. It's fun
being a dictatorial president (whoops, now the cat's out of the bag).

Temper your desire for fun with a sense of reality and things will probably
be OK. For instance, it'd be fun for me to ramble on more, but really,
who'd want to read my babbling?

dave
Geez, this article is too long. :)

Requirements for Officers by Dave Cho

Jeff wrote a long article on his interests in officer positions, and
at one point, commented how his personality strengths may not be
sufficient to be President, amongst other offices.

Well.

Officers should be:

Able to command the attention of the room. At the very
least, project their voice sufficiently such that a kangaroo in the
back can hear them. Someone should've told Harry that.

Able to wield subtlety and tact to manage and solve delicate
situations. Someone should've told Charley that.

Very familiar with the chapter. Someone should've told Kevin that after we elected him Prez after, what, 2 terms of hanging around? 3?

Physically attractive. Now, I was going to write "someone
should've told Emily that", but well, I value my life, so I'll
volunteer for this one.  :)

Notice a trend?

People have different strengths and weaknesses.

Among other things, being a good officer is knowing what your
strengths are and how to capitalize on them, and knowing what your
weaknesses are and how to minimize them. Remember, Emily is charming,
so that's why no one can remember what she did wrong. :)

A short on Chapter Awards by Kevin Iga

Here at Stanford University (Zeta Chapter) we ran into a problem a few
years back where we wanted to recognize people for contributing in
significant ways to the chapter, but we felt that the DSK was
inappropriate for some of those cases. Our solution: we started other
awards.

Our oldest is the Gordon R. Davis award for the most outstanding
graduating senior (or whatever they are when they're about to
graduate). Later, it was complemented by the Rubber Ducky award, a
rotating trophy in the shape of a rubber ducky, for the active or
pledge who most exemplified APO for the past term.

But we still felt it was too difficult to recognize people, so we made
more.

We've got the energizer bunny award for doing twice the active
requirements,

The "Stan the Stanford Smiling Squirrel" award for the top pledge
  (voted by pledges)

Leadership Award (for, guess what?) Friendship Award Service Award

In addition to this, the membership committee comes up with random
awards that the chapter doesn't really vote on, but whatever strikes
their fancy. They're not as serious, but they are also a good way of
recognizing people.

It means spending more time at some meeting (we do it at elections, of
all weeks to pick!) but it's not so bad as it lets people reflect on
how their brothers and pledges have been really cool over the past
year.

- Kevin Iga

Upon A Soapbox -- Glenn Berry

Near the end of each term the chapter undergoes a process to determine
which of the pledges will be elevated. Despite what Nationals seems
to suggest ought to be done, this process involved more than just
recording activity levels and comparing those to numerical
requirements. This is very definitely a conscious choice of the
chapter.

Being a brother is about more than just numbers and being a member.
It is about spirit, fellowship, commitment, integrity, honor, and
other characteristics not (presently) subject to numerical evaluation.
This is why there are interviews for the brothers to talk to the
pledges, this is why the brothers discuss things before voting. This
is why voting occurs outside a meeting format -- so that the brothers
can talk to the pledges if questions exist.

Accordingly, when the current brothers are considering whether or not
to vote in favor of each and every pledge, they should ask themselves
if that pledge meets the non-numerical critera. Are they committed to
service? Do they understand what being a brother means? Will they
demonstrate fellowship? Do they meet our moral and ethical standards?
(These are nowhere clearly stated, but they are closely derived from
the Boy Scout Oath and Law. If you look at APOcrypha issues from the
time Kevin Iga was an undergraduate those are well explained.) If you
can not answer all those questions affirmatively, go talk to the
pledge and learn what the answers are. If you must answer one of them
negatively, think seriously before you vote -- will this pledge be a
good brother? The intabgible questions are far more important than
whether or not numerical requirements are met; far too often we make
our decisions only on the numbers. We don't need to vote to do that,
we could have a computer program do it.

- Glenn

PubDir (David): ordered three rolls of paper today (administrative
       note: they have already come in), and I will go shopping soon

Historian (Brian): no more film

Advisory Comm. Chair (Joe): nothing to report

President (Alexis): conclave was cool. yay! no bids at the conclave
       (for the fall conclave). there was a motion: hosting next fall's
       conclave is tabled to sectional chairs (sparky (newly elected,
       congratulations!) and john grossi). bids are to be sent to them.
       whoever makes a bid can determine when the conclave is (there
       was some confusion over when we (AX) thought the conclave
       was and when the rest of the section thought the conclave was).
       If a bid isn't sent by august first, then there will be no conclave.
       we only need one a year, so it won't be catastrophic if we don't
       have one, but it would be really cool to have one. also, at the
       conclave, John Grossi got a sectional DSK.

Carnival: the program board, provost, and the UA should be giving
       us money. we have five groups doing booths. 4 rented carnival
       things: velcro wall, moon bounce, bungee run, and sea of balls.
       food may or may not be sold by us. (we need volunteers for
       food!). we have a booth in lobby 10. current publicity ideas:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~       kazoos, bubbles, and balloons.
Jeffrey: committee size is down, WE NEED HELP NOW!!! the cur-
       rent limiting factor is what we can organize
Big Screw (David): we raised around $120. there were lots of candi-
       dates, and neil dorow won. there was lots of apathy among the
       candidates this year. all the booth shifts were filled.
Ari:  for the record, when pipa painted the ic poster, she was doing
       what she was told to do.
Conclave Report
David:  Mike Repeta resigned as Section 96 chair.  AX nominated
       Richard Donovan, (Sparky) who won. At the 94/96 meeting, the
       chapter at the University of Vermont announced that it could
       not hold the next conclave.  We made a motion to allow the
       section chair to accept a conclave bid made in the summer. The
       understanding is that if we want it, it's ours. No one else will do
       it.  The Spring Conclave will be at Maine Maritime Academy.
       There was a yummy banquet, and that's all.
Alexis: There will be a CPW July 25th at Orono.
Sparky: Another one is at RPI.
David: The Section 96 picnic at on June 28th at Douglas Park. (Lo-
       cated at the intersection of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and
       Rhode Island.)
Announcements:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cathy: The silkscreening class has been postponed to a later date.

Sparky: I will try to find a permanent sectional representative for you.
       Tell me or your officers what you are looking for so you don't
       get a loser.

Ari: SFF is May 3rd. The Theme: "Starlight Express." Please offer
       music, unless you want to hear "Transformers" music all night.

Charley: Four people are interested in CPR. The class would be after
       finals.

Ari: If you do something weird with drop poster sales, be sure to write
       it down and put your name near it.

David: Make sure that brushes come back clean.

PFTGOTO:
~~~~~~~
Charley: BU is saying "maybe" about SFF.
Sparky: BU has their I-Banquet at 6 pm that night. I will try to bring
       as many of them as I can.
David: No modem adapter will make the VT320 I picked up in building
       18 work.1
Ingrid:  Concert choir concert is May 2nd.  We're doing "Come Ye
       Sons of Art" by Purcell, "Cantata Academica" by Britten, and
       Vaughan William's "Serenade to Music."
[Meeting adjourns.]
