Well. I guess I didn't wait long on this one. Well here goes:
Why I want to be AVP
I have run for this office before, and I have talked to AVP's before. I
plan on bugging Ari to ask him to tell me all those things about AVP I
didn't tell him at the beginning of this term, and of course I will track
down other AVP's if they have time. I feel, however, that I have the
ability to do this job, and I am quite certain I can learn any of the AVP
tricks that I don't know already. But of course here is where I tell you
what I would like to do as AVP.
Some people have told me how it bugs them that some things are on Athena
and not readily available in the office. I also have heard mumblings on how
some of the Athena stuff is very non-intuitive, and that maybe it shouldn't
be kept on Athena at all. I would like to improve this situation by making
some things easier to get to, at least by making info available in the
office. (For instance, you all know where to quickly grab a copy of the
bylaws right? What about an alumni address list? Got that handy? You know
that place where we keep sign up sheets right???)
This should include the How-To's that are located in the APO locker. Some
of these How-To's have not been updated in a long time, and some of them
are never looked at because they are on Athena. I don't consider it bad
that they are on Athena, but because they are, they are less visible, and I
don't think most brothers use them. However, people did write those
How-To's for a reason, and I actually appreciated this a lot when I was
first learning how to PC events.
I thought the Mentor List was a cool thing, and I would like to see it
updated. Perhaps a lot of the stuff in the APO locker could be added to the
web page to make it easier to find, easier to read. Just an idea there.
As far as coming to meetings, I can make them as long as they are on
Tuesdays. I am still quite attached to Concert Band, and so the meetings on
Wednesdays will not do for me. However, if necessary, I will find someone
else to take the minutes for me, as the Bylaws clearly state that it does
not necessarily need to be the AVP who takes minutes.
Finally, as for hosedness, one can never be sure. But I will only be taking
three classes next term, and hopefully I will only be a term behind =-> I
don't think this should be an issue, cause hey, wasn't I supposed to be
inactive this term??? A lot of people would like to thwack me over the head
for suggesting that I was inactive this term.
As a final note, there are a lot of candidates for this position, and I
know that its a tough choice, because there can be no doubt that there is
more than one qualified person for this job. So, I might as well point out
that I have thought about it and I really wouldn't mind if I got elected as
Apoc Ed instead of AVP. I do want the job--I have been through elections
before, on both sides of the fence, and I want this job just as much as any
of the candidates--but I am here offering the opinion that I would be just
as happy being Apoc Ed next term as I would be as AVP.
Why I want to be Apoc Ed
I never have actually run for this office before. That is to say that I got
elected to something else before I actually had to get up and say anything
for this position. I have a few Apoc Eds around to ask for advice--I think
Michael has been doing a good job as Apoc Ed this term--and I would really
like to keep Apoc's coming out on a regular basis. I also have some ideas
for making the text of the Apoc more accessible. Some of you remember a
time when the Apoc was distributed electronically. I heard a lot of
positive feedback on this, so I would like to bring this back. As a new
feature, I would like to put Apoc's on line so that people can access them.
I am not sure how useful everyone would find this, but I heard some people
mentioning it, and I would like to try it for a while (I was also just
thinking we could save on paper costs--remember we need to save money some
where in the chapter--if we then only printed a requested number of Apocs,
the rest of us reading it on-line. Yes I know Apoc's are not dreadfully
expensive, but still =-).
I would like to see more useful things put in the Apoc, because right now
it seems like we have occasional articles and minutes (and the quotes of
course). We could put notes about upcoming projects, upcoming fellowship
events, and perhaps an updated copy of the WUAPO, as it usually updates as
the term goes along. Suggestions put in the suggestion box should be put in
the Apoc, and of course the quotes, as there seems to be no shortage of
them. Because of the popularity of the flame book, the worst and best
flames could be put in there somewhere. Doesn't seem like we are lacking
material here. Also, I like buying people ice cream, so I think I will
throw in occasional contests and such, just for fun, because of course I am
a fluffy fuzzy guy and I buy people ice cream because its a cool thing to
do occasionally.
As far as my hosedness in the future is concerned, you might as well refer
to my AVP article. I will be taking the same classes whether I become AVP,
ApocEd, or just you random fluffy brother.
YiLFS,
Jeffrey
