(If you're not free June 3, skip to the end of this message.)
June 3 is NATIONAL TRAILS DAY, an opportunity to repair trails, hug trees,
worship the earth, and get free t-shirts. The Appalachian Mountain Club,
Eastern Mountain Sports, and various other trail-dependent entities are
organizing volunteer trips to freshen up the Boston Harbor Islands, as well
as sites in the Berkshires. About 150 people of properly varietous ages,
backgrounds, and skill levels are expected to participate.
The Harbor Island group will leave from Long Wharf downtown (next to the
Aquarium; try the Aquarium stop on the Blue Line, or Government Center on
the Green) at 7:30 a.m. A "light breakfast" will be provided; bring lunch.
The crew will work through the early afternoon, and then play ("Bring games!"
said the AMC staff person brightly). The ferry will deposit you back at
Long Wharf at 5:30 p.m.
Scott went last year, and he still has his free t-shirt. It seems like a good
thing to do & a fine opportunity to meet other Boston outdoorsy types.
To register, or get more information, call Tahnit (Tah-NEET) Sakakeeny at the
AMC at (617) 523-0655 ext.359 .
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: The AMC is helping to build a new 8-mile bike
path along the Neponset River, from the Harbor to, er, somewhere inland.
(I think she said the Blue Hills Reservation, but I'm not entirely sure).
Tahnit would also appreciate volunteers on July 15, August 26 or September 9.
