Incidentally, check out the link to "Academic Computing at MIT" I took a page from the MacVicar report and hyperized it. WWW can do about 80% of what the report wants and since there are servers which support kerberos authenticated connections, there's no reason why you can't have WWW do almost all of what the MacVicar report wants MIT software to do.
